I definitely feel like I'm losing momentum in this challenge as we near the end of the month. I'm going to try to do a bit more learning over the last couple of days though.

    First Steps: Start with You
Did your estimated plastic footprint surprise you? How does it compare to the global average? After estimating your annual use, how did it feel to put a number on it? Did it inspire a sense of urgency, or something else?

I'm good at reducing/eliminating some type of plastic use, e.g I hardly ever have a disposable plastic bottle of water, but I know I could work to reduce the amount of plastic I use related to food -- as takeout, convenience packaging at the grocery store, and using plastic wrap.

Being consistently cognizant of plastics in the ocean when vacationing - picking up garbage on a beach. But closer to home trying to take action—like picking up a piece of garbage every day around campus usually on my way in —shows real environmental stewardship. Small, mindful actions like yours/ours can inspire others and create a ripple effect of positive change.

What did you discover about recycling and waste management in your area that more people should know? How might you share that knowledge?

There really is a lot of plastic packaging that can be taken somewhere locally for recycling beyond just the items accepted in our curbside recycling. However, it takes effort on all of our parts to store it and return it occasionally, and I'm sure that's easier for some people than others (e.g. depending on transportation, work schedules, etc.). I have noticed more advertising lately to promote some local changes to what can be recycled where, but we need to spread the word further and help make is as convenient as possible for people to recycle these items.

What do you think would encourage more people to drop off their recyclables at a Sarcan in Regina?

I suspect it's largely a matter of convenience. Perhaps people who regularly take other items back for the refund at Sarcan may be more likely to save and take other products back with them too. Also, despite the advertising and ways to seek out the information, a number of people may still be unaware of the other types of recycling that can be taken there.

I had a good conversation today with a colleague about the efforts made by some offices on campus and not others to recycle their plastics. It seems offices that do not have easy access to a sink to wash their used plastics will be more likely to throw them away in the garbage rather than recycling.
