I swapped out plastic hand soap containers in our bathrooms with bar soap and a refillable soap container from a local refill store. Researching plastic soap containers, I learned there's no issue using bar soap - we "fixed" a problem (cross-contamination) that didn't exist. Yes, I think the true reason for the industry moving us to liquid soap containers is to create a system where the consumer uses more product & therefor buy replacements more frequently. And a bottle of liquid soap is more expensive than a bar of soap.

How does understanding the origin of plastic change the way you think about using it in everyday life?

Using some plastics for some long-lived items may be acceptable, but not disposables. It is irresponsible to create materials that harm will harm the environment for millennia, yet producers bear no responsibility.

I'm going to remove all plastic soap containers from my house and only use bar soaps. That will be where I start. I'm going to try to find a good bar shampoo and conditioner as well!

There is a lot of information about plastics that no one is talking about. How do we get more information out to people so that they care more about this issue instead of going along status quo? I'm thinking it's just one day at a time...one change at a time...one person at a time...but it's way more urgent than that!!!

I thought I knew a lot about plastics and their origins. As it turns out, I learned a lot and didn't know as much as I thought. But I guess this is the case with most people. We just use what's around us...what we've always used and don't really think about it. I'm really glad I'm diving into learning more this year!

I hadn't thought about buying bread from the bakery to reduce plastic waste from bread bags.

What do you think the confusion around plastic labels says about our waste systems — and how could they be improved? What role do you think clear labeling should play in helping people make better choices — and who should be responsible for that?

Recycling symbols are confusing for everyone! I asked our local recycling experts at Recology what's the best way to ensure I'm not "wishcycling" when it comes to recycling plastics ... I was told they always take 1, 2 and 5 , but if I have any doubt, always put it in the garbage bin. And, always screw the cap on the container, if there is one. Otherwise, the small, hard plastic gets caught in the recycling machinery.

Restaurants in my area are most concerned with costs at present and not really the environmental impact. So I'm going to continue to press for being able to bring my own containers.

While I know restaurants have to watch the bottom line, I'm still sad that there's not more acceptance that takeout containers should be sustainable. I try to remember to take my reusable container with me when I go out to eat. It may look odd to others--but the more of us who do this, the more normal it will seem to those others and they might follow our example. At least I hope so.

How do these different materials shift your sense of what’s truly “sustainable” — and what’s just marketing? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

I'm really seeing how difficult plastic is for humans and the environment. I didn't know that biodegradable was the worst option. There are only so many options for recycling near me so I'm going to focus on using as little plastic as I possibly can!
