Went with friends to see the movie How to Poison a Planet focused on 3M's role in poisoning the planet with "forever chemicals." It included the indigenous perspective of the natural world as part of who we are.

Which microplastics solution did you choose? Did you learn anything interesting or surprising while deciding what to purchase?

Thanks to my husband for learning about Planet Care micro plastic filter. The company takes back the filters for recycling. Next up: looking into ways to reduce the plastic in our clothes.

I appreciate how Becca and Fred lead our community in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana. The organized viewing of 'Kiss the Ground' on Sunday 7/20/2025 was witnessed by about 18 people. The discussion afterwards was inspiring. Thank you.

What was the most eye-opening fact you learned about the limits of recycling, and how might it shift your habits? How do you feel knowing that so much of what we put in recycling bins may never actually be recycled? What should we do differently?

Only about 10% of the plastics we use gets recycled.
Recyling plastics takes away the guilt we ought to feel for consuming so much plastic in the first place. Our focus should be on eliminating plastic use as much as we can.
Also recycling the correct way is critical. Wrong items or unclean items in the recycling bin can create a lot of headache for the recyclers.

All important points Fred. We try our best at our house to eliminate buying so much plastic, but some essentials are unavoidable (e.g. insulin needles). We also try to ensure our recycling bin has only clean plastics that are recycled by our city. But the nest house down the road can ruin an intire truck's recycling. But we continue to do our best, no?

I gave my daughter who recently moved out on her own reusable shopping bags. I stressed the importance of actually using them and what a difference something that seems so small makes. I also told her to get in the habit of leaving them in her car so she doesn't forget to use them.

I post Tips on behalf of our church's Creation Care Team in our church's weekly ENews. Today I learned a lot of tips about recycling that will be shared in the ENews.

I wonder how many loads of recyclables my spouse and I have contaminated because we have wishfully put incorrect or not-completely -clean items in our green recycle bin.

This got me too. I've now learned that experts likely throw more things away than wishcyclers.

      Sadly, the reco is

When in doubt throw it out.

Wron or unclean items in the recycling bin create a lot of hassles for the recycler. Sometimes an entire batch has to be thrown out if it goes not meet the quality specs.

I would strongly recommend that u visit the Rumpke recycling facility. It is a 1-2 hour tour. U will learn a lot.

How do these different materials shift your sense of what’s truly “sustainable” — and what’s just marketing? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

As companies begin to capitalize on marketing biodegradable products, the consumer has the responsibility of learning what is involved in the term "biodegradable". Once we are educated, we can make reasonable choices that benefit the earth, nature, and hamanity.
I do not think that bioplastics are acceptable to Rumpke in Cincinnati.

My son in law, who grew up in California, has been sorting and recycling since he was a child. I, on the other hand, did not begin to recycle at the Hub until after I retired from business last year. I have been a life-long Cincinnatian and throughout my long life I have been totally unaware of the reasons for recycling and its benefits. My dear thanks go to OLLI and the Environmental Action Group of the Womens' City Club. Both are extremely enlightening.
