My sister lives on the coast; my visits to the beach with her spark many conversations about plastic (and lots of picking up litter, too). We have exchanged small, practical gifts over the years. I just bought an extra package of my favorite plastic-free dental floss to send to her.

Over the weeks, my awareness of the plastic in my life has increased. I am trying to do more baking to reduce the plastic packaging that comes into our house. I have a few items in mind that I would like to add to increase my "reusable" kit (a collapsable metal cup; quality bamboo flatware that I will actually use; more non-plastic storage containers). I'm curious if 100% cotton thread is easy to come by, though I have thread from several family members, so I am not likely to need to purchase more soon. I'm thinking about writing to the company that makes the inhaler I use daily for asthma; regulations have led to new delivery methods without chlorofluorocarbons, so I would like to thank the company for this new and effective design and then nudge them to consider how to make the device refillable so I don't have to discard a plastic actuator every month. And I note how very small this action is.

A small step, perhaps, but reducing/eliminating plastic is going to take those small steps by each of us. And the other users of your inhaler will benefit when your company hears & implements your ask.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
Did your estimated plastic footprint surprise you? How does it compare to the global average? After estimating your annual use, how did it feel to put a number on it? Did it inspire a sense of urgency, or something else?

I used the Plastic Bank footprint calculator and came in at just below the average for the US. Considering the effort I put in to reducing our plastic use in our home, I can understand why it's so hard to make an impact as an individual (also, some of the choices I can make--like finding condiments in glass jars--don't show up in the calculator and aren't available to everyone).

I haven't been as diligent as I would have liked to have been, but I check some boxes already - carry my water bottle, recycle curbside and at the hub, carry go containers and reuseable bags in my car, try to buy cotton or at the thrift store, buy soap sheets for laundry now, took some plastic containers to the thrift store and try to use glass, am looking into the microfiber filters for washing machines, pick up litter and recycle the plastic, am involved with a rights of nature group, contribute to environmental groups, speak up when I can about not using plastic water bottles particularly. I'm inspired to look for more ways since it all seems so little compared to the mountains of plastic used, including packaging is huge.

Hi Deborah! I'm feeling the same about my habits and the "mountain" vs my mole hill of effort. I'm trying to figure out ways to use my voice more and in new ways.

Went with friends to see the movie How to Poison a Planet focused on 3M's role in poisoning the planet with "forever chemicals." It included the indigenous perspective of the natural world as part of who we are.

Interesting! What's your rating about the movie?

I would rate the movie as well done, informational and disturbing as to what happened but also realizing we need to learn from indigenous wisdom.

Which microplastics solution did you choose? Did you learn anything interesting or surprising while deciding what to purchase?

Thanks to my husband for learning about Planet Care micro plastic filter. The company takes back the filters for recycling. Next up: looking into ways to reduce the plastic in our clothes.

I appreciate how Becca and Fred lead our community in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana. The organized viewing of 'Kiss the Ground' on Sunday 7/20/2025 was witnessed by about 18 people. The discussion afterwards was inspiring. Thank you.

What was the most eye-opening fact you learned about the limits of recycling, and how might it shift your habits? How do you feel knowing that so much of what we put in recycling bins may never actually be recycled? What should we do differently?

Only about 10% of the plastics we use gets recycled.
Recyling plastics takes away the guilt we ought to feel for consuming so much plastic in the first place. Our focus should be on eliminating plastic use as much as we can.
Also recycling the correct way is critical. Wrong items or unclean items in the recycling bin can create a lot of headache for the recyclers.

All important points Fred. We try our best at our house to eliminate buying so much plastic, but some essentials are unavoidable (e.g. insulin needles). We also try to ensure our recycling bin has only clean plastics that are recycled by our city. But the nest house down the road can ruin an intire truck's recycling. But we continue to do our best, no?

I gave my daughter who recently moved out on her own reusable shopping bags. I stressed the importance of actually using them and what a difference something that seems so small makes. I also told her to get in the habit of leaving them in her car so she doesn't forget to use them.
