I was unable to get a meeting scheduled in July with my financial planner to ensure my investments are supporting things that are important to me. I will still do this, just not for PFJ.

I learned that one of the reasons so many products come in plastic, is because the products contain so much water. There are companies that are starting to make products such as shampoo and beauty products that do not come in plastic.

I discuss the importance of recycling and buying in bulk with my daughter while we pack her lunch each day.

What surprised you the most about the health impacts of plastic exposure, and how might this new understanding influence the choices you make around food storage and everyday products?

I was surprised at how harmful plastics can be to our health. Microplastics are everywhere. Warming up items in plastic can be very detrimental to our health. Frightening.

I am at the state fair today. I brought my own water bottle, straw and napkin, but all of the yummy snacks will not be plastic free 🙃

When I go to outdoor events that feature food, I tend to be so messy that I might as well just plan on using my shirt as my napkin in the first place since so much food always ends up on it anyway. I think I'll start doing that and explain to people that I'm acting sustainably. :)

Good job with what you brought! It did not occur to me to being a napkin. Smart!

The month was extremley busy and I did not put in the time necessary. Already thinking about doing better next year!
I had difficulty navigating the website on my phone, so this added to my outcome.

The ink bottles that came with the printer we just installed had information about specific retailers that accept the empty bottles for recycling. Hurray!

What was the most eye-opening fact you learned about the limits of recycling, and how might it shift your habits? How do you feel knowing that so much of what we put in recycling bins may never actually be recycled? What should we do differently?

Actually it made me saddened to think that all this time I thought that I was doing the right thing by being diligent with recycling. Now I know that a lot of products marked recyclable are most likely not recyclable. I plan to research this some more. Makes me aggravated.

It does seem to me sometimes that government entities and other organizations are trying to fob us off with pixie dream dust greenwashing promises of the effective of recycling programs in order to make us feel like we're already accomplishing something...and thereby discouraging us for demanding real action.

How do these different materials shift your sense of what’s truly “sustainable” — and what’s just marketing? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

    Christina Mlinaric's avatar
    Christina Mlinaric 7/22/2025 6:39 AM
Bioplastics are basically greenwashing. They break down in less time than conventional plastics, which is how they get the name "bioplastics" but they're made up of fossil fuels and toxic chemical additives just like conventional plastics are. Also, the U.S. has no regulations on what chemical additives are used for them, so they could be more toxic to the environment than conventional plastics for all we know.

I stopped at a Sheetz to get gas and cold brew the other day and brought in my thermos from the car to fill. I wasn't sure if they would have a problem with that, but I went to the counter and told the person working how many ounces I filled. I then found out that Sheetz gives you a discount for bringing in your own containers! 20 oz of cold brew only cost like $1.40! Not too shabby :) It's a great reminder that it's always worth asking or trying to bring your own containers!

Post covid it's so hard to know what's acceptable or not! That's awesome that they give a Sheetz about bringing your own cup!! 😄
