Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Host or attend a clothing swap
Fast fashion is a major source of plastic pollution. I will organize a clothing swap with friends, neighbors, or coworkers to keep clothes in use longer, reduce plastic-based textiles, and build community.
First Steps: Start with You
Learn how plastic is made
Understanding the origins of plastic helps us see its environmental impact more clearly. I will spend 10 minutes learning how plastic is made — from fossil fuels to finished product — and reflect on how that knowledge influences my choices.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Celebrate someone else’s plastic-free effort
Positive reinforcement goes a long way in fostering sustainable change. I will celebrate someone’s effort to reduce plastic — whether big or small — by acknowledging their success in the feed or on social media and encouraging them to keep going.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Catch microplastics in laundry before they spread
Washing synthetic fabrics releases tiny plastic fibers that end up in our waterways. I will install a washing machine filter or use a microplastic-catching device to capture microplastics before they leave my home — and I will share what I did and why with others to inspire more sustainable laundry habits.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Invite others to join the Ecochallenge
Our actions are more powerful when we take them together. I will invite someone to join the Ecochallenge with me so we can learn and take action together.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Swap ideas for reducing plastic with someone close to you
Sharing ideas helps us stay motivated and discover new ways to take action. I will share ideas with friends or family members about ways we each reduce plastic in our lives.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Learn about policies that support reducing plastics
Policy is one of the most powerful tools for reducing plastic waste at scale. I will spend 6 minutes learning about current or proposed plastic-related policies, such as bans on single-use plastics or extended producer responsibility laws, to better understand how systems can change.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Donate to organizations working on systemic plastic reform
Some nonprofits are leading the charge to change policies and corporate practices. I will donate to an organization working to reduce plastic at the source and promote systemic solutions for a healthier planet.

REFLECTION QUESTIONChange the Game: Shift Systems and PoliciesWhat led you to choose this organization, and what kind of long-term impact do you hope your support will have?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/12/2025 2:22 PMI was introduced to it by the green team at our zoo, which I am a part of. It reminds me each year of my level of consumption and helps me get it in check -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFirst Steps: Start with YouHow does understanding the origin of plastic change the way you think about using it in everyday life?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/12/2025 2:16 PMIt is amazing, in general, how far some of the products we buy travel to get to us, so we are not just talking about plastics, but fossil fuel, and so many other resources. We should be taking all of those things into consideration as we purchase -

REFLECTION QUESTIONLevel Up: Influence Friends and FamilyWhat conversations came up when you invited someone? Did anything surprise you about their response or perspective?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/12/2025 2:12 PMMost of the people I know did this with me last year, but those are the ones that are really bringing in the new people....spread the message! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLevel Up: Influence Friends and FamilyWhat did you learn from organizing or attending the swap? Did it change your thinking about consumption or community? Post a pic of your favorite new-to-you item in the feed!
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/12/2025 2:10 PMIn the past 20 years, clothing has become so disposable. I try to buy used when I can and to repurpose thing that I have in new ways. I can make a pair of pants ;last a really long time! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONChange the Game: Shift Systems and PoliciesWhat did you discover about how local laws handle plastic pollution and health impacts? Are there any gaps or opportunities for improvement that stand out to you?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/12/2025 2:08 PMI am always surprised how few facilities actually exist for all of the items that are recyclable. I am lucky to work at a zoo that takes having resources very seriously -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLevel Up: Influence Friends and FamilyHow did it feel to recognize someone else’s effort? What impact do you think your celebration had on them?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/12/2025 2:07 PMI think most people really want to do better in their daily lives when it comes to recycling, so they are really happy when someone notices their efforts -
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/06/2025 12:11 PMsometimes, a little kick in the pants is all we need to be more aware of the world around us. I do this challenge every year (3rd now) and it helps me remember to look for plastic free options, to carry my own bags, to reuse. It can be hard and I doubt that I can be 100% plastic free, even for a month, but I really try.-

You are “goals” for me! This is my first year with the Eco Challenge and I’ve already wished I’d known about this great platform earlier. I’m refusing all single-use bags and will purchase metal straws during Amazon Prime week! -
