Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go
Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.
First Steps: Start with You
Design my grocery routine for less plastic
Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 15 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.
First Steps: Start with You
Put reusables where I'll remember them
Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.
First Steps: Start with You
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Create a reminder system or routine for remembering reusables
Even the best intentions can be forgotten in the rush of daily life. I will create a system — like a note on the door or a checklist — to help me and others in my household remember to grab our reusables before we go.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Promote plastic awareness during an event or meeting
Events are powerful moments to inspire change. I will include a brief message, resource, or tip about reducing plastic at a meeting, celebration, or community gathering I attend or help organize.
First Steps: Start with You
Learn how plastic is made
Understanding the origins of plastic helps us see its environmental impact more clearly. I will spend 5 minutes learning how plastic is made — from fossil fuels to finished product — and reflect on how that knowledge influences my choices.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFirst Steps: Start with YouDid your estimated plastic footprint surprise you? How does it compare to the global average? After estimating your annual use, how did it feel to put a number on it? Did it inspire a sense of urgency, or something else?
Katie Van Singel 7/21/2025 2:12 PMEstimating my plastic footprint was definitely eye opening. I had been doing well, but now I feel like there is a lot more I can be doing to offset my footprint. Part of my footprint increase is due to my county removing recycling from pickup, so I will do more research on how I can recycle in my area. -
Katie Van Singel 7/01/2025 6:40 PMToday I started my Plastic Free July journey, but was not able to reach any of my goals. There is still one month remaining and I am trying to approach this month with a mentality of reducing my single use plastics. It may be harder than I anticipated this month but I will continue to do my best.-

Katie Van Singel 7/01/2025 5:57 AMI hope to learn more about plastic production and reduce my single use plastics more. Living in Florida means that the ocean is right in my backyard, and all waterways lead to the ocean. I hope to find more local businesses working to reduce our plastic pollution here and make a difference!
