First Steps: Start with You

Learn how plastic is made

Understanding the origins of plastic helps us see its environmental impact more clearly. I will spend 10 minutes learning how plastic is made — from fossil fuels to finished product — and reflect on how that knowledge influences my choices.

DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Understand plastic labels

Those recycling numbers and symbols can be confusing. I will spend 5 minutes learning what different plastic labels mean, including what can and can’t be recycled, to make more informed choices when I shop.

DAILY ACTIONS

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Host or attend a clothing swap

Fast fashion is a major source of plastic pollution. I will organize a clothing swap with friends, neighbors, or coworkers to keep clothes in use longer, reduce plastic-based textiles, and build community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Discover the difference between bioplastics, compostable plastics, and recyclable plastics

Not all “eco-friendly” plastics are created equal. I will spend 10 minutes exploring the differences between bioplastics, compostable plastics, and recyclable plastics—and what happens to each at the end of its life.

COMPLETED 9

Share My Why

Take the Beyond Plastic Ecochallenge Feedback Survey

I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!

A few friends and I have our own version of a clothing swap where we send each other packages of clothes, books, trinkets and include any items we feel they would like and enjoy.

I have two boxes ready to send to a friend in CA and one in NYC :) just need to write a couple of notes and then it’s off to the post office!!

I love this idea because of the joy it must bring to its participants, both the givers and the recipients. Back in high school I used to mail people silly things--old greeting cards, weird advertisements, and random articles cut out of magazines--and though there was really no point in it other than to divert, people liked it. This swap not only sparks happiness, it helps save the planet! It doesn't get any better than that!

This is such a wonderful idea! Also, a great way to share items you loved with the people you love!

Wow! I am realizing how little I knew about the origins of plastics, how they were made, and their history! Loved watching some videos on the plastic history. Big corporations don't want to take responsibility for their use and distribution of plastics and push that responsibility on consumers! While that might not be a surprise, I didn't realize how Keep America Beautiful is tied into this...so much for me to learn!!

I surely will be more aware of how I can reduce use but do wish the responsibility was shifted towards corporations. I know they would scream under pressure to spend money and other resources on sustainable packaging. I hope with a shift in mindset from consumers it forces them to reevaluate their priorities as well as impact.

Reading and hearing more about microplastics (and how they are everywhere) is really concerning. I don’t want that stuff in my food or in my body so I’ll be making some changes this month!!

Excited to see how I can learn more how I can reduce plastics in my household and create some new habits!!
