Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product I have
Learning or sharing repair skills can keep useful items in use and out of the landfill. I will teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product — like sewing, electronic repair, or furniture restoration — and share what I did with my community, workplace, or group to encourage others to do the same.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Learn about policies that support reducing plastics
Policy is one of the most powerful tools for reducing plastic waste at scale. I will spend 15 minutes learning about current or proposed plastic-related policies, such as bans on single-use plastics or extended producer responsibility laws, to better understand how systems can change.
First Steps: Start with You
Understand Plastic’s Impact on My Health
Plastics can leach harmful chemicals into food, water, and the air we breathe. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the health impacts of plastic exposure and explore safer swaps — like choosing glass or stainless steel over plastic for food storage and drinking water.
First Steps: Start with You
Put reusables where I'll remember them
Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.
First Steps: Start with You
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go
Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Support a plastic or climate advocacy campaign
Advocacy campaigns can drive real change by amplifying public support. I will find and support a campaign — through a donation, signature, or share — that’s working to reduce plastic pollution or address the climate impacts of plastic.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Keep my reusable kit with me and model it in public
My everyday choices can influence others. I will carry and use a reusable kit in public spaces, modeling plastic-reducing behaviors and showing that small changes are possible.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Participate in or organize a community clean up
Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Put up a sign or note about reducing plastic at a shared space (kitchen, dorm, office)
Visual cues can inspire action in shared spaces. I will place a friendly sign or reminder in a common area — like a kitchen, bathroom, or office — to encourage less plastic use and spark conversation. I’ll include a clear, specific call to action so people know exactly how to take the next step.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Create or distribute a guide to reducing plastic in my community, organization, or a group
Clear, accessible information makes it easier for others to take action. I will create or share a simple guide with tips, resources, or local options to help people in my community, organization, or group reduce plastic use.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Organize a plastic audit in my workplace or community group
Understanding what types of plastic show up most can inspire smarter solutions. I will organize or take part in a group plastic audit to track what’s being used and start a conversation about alternatives.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Host a “bring your own container” lunch or event
Gatherings are a great time to model new habits. I will plan or participate in a lunch or event where people bring their own containers, utensils, or cups to reduce single-use plastic.

Malonie Snyder 7/24/2025 7:33 AMThroughout July, I became much more conscious of how often I encountered plastic in my daily routines. By tracking my usage, I realized that plastics are woven into almost every aspect of modern life, from packaging to household items. This awareness was the first step in making meaningful changes. One significant takeaway was discovering effective alternatives to single-use plastics. For instance, I swapped plastic grocery bags for reusable cloth totes and replaced disposable water bottles with a stainless steel one. Beeswax wraps and glass containers proved to be great substitutes for plastic wrap and food storage. These changes were not only environmentally helpful, but also surprisingly convenient.Admittedly, avoiding plastic altogether was challenging, especially when eating out or purchasing certain products. I learned that planning ahead—such as bringing my own containers or refusing unnecessary straws and bags—made a big difference. I also discovered that some sustainable swaps, like bulk shopping and choosing items with minimal packaging, required more time and effort, but were ultimately rewarding.Connecting with others who share an interest in sustainability motivated me to keep going. Tips, recipes, and encouragement from online forums and local groups provided practical solutions and moral support. In addition, researching companies with sustainable packaging led me to new brands and products aligned with my goals.Looking beyond July, I am committed to further reducing my plastic footprint. My ongoing efforts include:· Consistently carrying reusable bags, bottles, and utensils.· Prioritizing products packaged in glass, metal, or paper over plastic.· Shopping at local markets where bulk and package-free options are available.· Advocating for plastic reduction in my community and workplace.· Educating myself about recycling and proper disposal to minimize environmental impact. This month-long challenge has inspired a long-term mindset shift. While the transition away from plastic is ongoing and sometimes imperfect, each small step feels meaningful. I am encouraged by the progress made, the lessons learned, and the collective impact that comes from sustained, mindful choices.Every month is an opportunity to do better, and I look forward to discovering new ways to protect our planet by continuing to say no to plastic.-
