First Steps: Start with You
Track my plastic use for a day or a week
Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Learn about community-level options to reduce plastic
Widespread change starts with local action and community innovation. I will spend 5 minutes learning about programs or initiatives in my area that reduce plastic use, such as third-party sanitization services, repair cafes, food gleaning, lending libraries, bulk or thrift stores, bans on single-use items, or zero-waste businesses.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prepare a low-plastic meal with a friend or family member
Reducing plastic can be easier — and more fun — when shared. I will plan and prepare a meal with friends or family that minimizes single-use packaging and plastic waste.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Recommend a documentary, podcast, or article about plastic to others
People are more likely to take action when someone they trust makes a recommendation. I will share a documentary, podcast, or article that helped me understand the impact of plastic to spark curiosity, conversation, and action in others.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Promote plastic awareness during an event or meeting
Events are powerful moments to inspire change. I will include a brief message, resource, or tip about reducing plastic at a meeting, celebration, or community gathering I attend or help organize.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Leave a positive review for a business offering low-waste options
Businesses take notice when we show support for their sustainable choices—and so do our friends and neighbors. I will write a positive review for and personally recommend a business that offers low-plastic or refillable options to help others discover it and demonstrate that sustainability is valued by customers.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Pack a low or no-plastic lunch and talk about it with others
Food packaging is a major source of plastic. I will pack a lunch with little or no plastic and use it as a conversation starter with coworkers, classmates, or friends to share tips and inspire change.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Put up a sign or note about reducing plastic at a shared space (kitchen, dorm, office)
Visual cues can inspire action in shared spaces. I will place a friendly sign or reminder in a common area — like a kitchen, bathroom, or office — to encourage less plastic use and spark conversation. I’ll include a clear, specific call to action so people know exactly how to take the next step.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Start a plastic reduction conversation at school, work, or a community group
Big changes often begin with one bold conversation. I will bring up the topic of reducing plastic at school, work, or in a group I’m part of, planting the seed for collective action.

Just learned Big Sweep, a local volunteer group here in Wake County, cleans about 15,000lbs of trash, tires, and even mattresses out of our local watersheds. I gotta check out these guys and possibly loop them in with 1%.-

Hi all! Welcome back after that long, wonderful weekend! Anyone track their plastic usage over the weekend? Were you shocked at the results or are you in the plastic-free zone?-

While I was on vacation, I tried to keep track of my plastic usage and I am proud to say I kept it to a minimum. Didn't take straws, no take out and used my Baggu tote as my purse to avoid bags for my purchases :)

This is a great resource for supporting stores/retailers that are working towards reducing waste - bulk, thrift, co-ops. Many of our accounts are listed, too.
