First Steps: Start with You

Discover the difference between bioplastics, compostable plastics, and recyclable plastics

Not all “eco-friendly” plastics are created equal. I will spend 10 minutes exploring the differences between bioplastics, compostable plastics, and recyclable plastics—and what happens to each at the end of its life.

First Steps: Start with You

Estimate My Plastic Consumption

Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.

First Steps: Start with You

Understand Plastic’s Impact on My Health

Plastics can leach harmful chemicals into food, water, and the air we breathe. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the health impacts of plastic exposure and explore safer swaps — like choosing glass or stainless steel over plastic for food storage and drinking water.

First Steps: Start with You

Check recycling near me

Recycling rules vary by location. I’ll spend 5 minutes learning which plastics my local program accepts. This helps me avoid “wishcycling” — tossing items in the bin and hoping they’ll be recycled, even if they aren’t.

First Steps: Start with You

Put reusables where I'll remember them

Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.

There really is a lot of plastic packaging that can be taken somewhere locally for recycling beyond just the items accepted in our curbside recycling. However, it takes effort on all of our parts to store it and return it occasionally, and I'm sure that's easier for some people than others (e.g. depending on transportation, work schedules, etc.). I have noticed more advertising lately to promote some local changes to what can be recycled where, but we need to spread the word further and help make is as convenient as possible for people to recycle these items.

We're over halfway through the challenge! I've learned more about plastics and proper recycling and I've been really good at putting my reusable shopping bags back in the car after using them!

My recycling stash is getting larger so I'll have to drop the items off soon, but it is making me recognize that plastic is everywhere!

So far with this challenge, I have learned some new ideas I can implement. There are more flexible plastic items I can be recycling -- I had thought that food bags were likely too dirty with crumbs/residue to drop off for recycling, but that doesn't seem to be the case from reading through the list of accepted items. I also want to get in the habit of using more reusable items, such as straws, and alternatives to plastic food wrap, and I've gotten some good ideas here.

I have what may seem like a silly question, but to those who take reusable straws with you -- how do you store your used straw until you arrive back home (or other appropriate place) to clean it?
I have a couple sets of reusable straws, but I haven't gotten in the habit of taking them with me in the car because I don't want to use one and put it back with the clean one in the case or use a disposable bag to store it while dirty since that seems to defeat the purpose.

I have a little cloth bag my metal straw came with; after I have used my straw, I look for a nearby sink to rinse it with water, and then wash it once I return home.

I have a case for my reuseable straw, typically I keep it in my bag with my other belongings. That way once I get home its in the case and I can clean it out.

I forgot to check in here on the weekend, but the challenge was still in my mind during my activities. I had my reusable bags in the trunk of my car when I stopped to grab a few groceries on Saturday and I've placed my bags beside my door so they're ready to take back to the car the next time. I am also adjusting to some changes to the curbside recycling rules in our city and did some organizing for that on Sunday.

I'm happy our city has ways to recycle a variety of plastic products, including options for plastic bags and packaging but it would be great if we could recycle it all on one place. I think that convenience would convince more people to participate.

Agreed. Many people will not bother making the effort to separate their recyclables and take items to Sarcan.

I try to keep reusable bags in the trunk of my car at all times so I have them available. Sometimes the challenge is taking them back to the car after using them to take purchases into my house.
