Morgan's actions

First Steps: Start with You

Support businesses with plastic-free or refillable options

Where we spend our money shapes the market. I will support a business that offers plastic-free, low-waste, or refillable products or services.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Ask a local restaurant to allow reusables or reduce packaging

Food businesses are major sources of single-use plastic. I will talk to a local café, food truck, or restaurant about allowing reusable containers, more sustainable materials, or cutting down on unnecessary plastic packaging.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Choose secondhand or a recycled product for my next purchase

Buying recycled or secondhand products helps close the loop and reduces demand for new plastic. I will look for and purchase a product made from recycled materials or choose a secondhand option the next time I shop to keep valuable resources in use longer.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Swap one product for a refillable or plastic-free option

Even small swaps can add up to big impact. I will replace one product I use regularly — like soap, cleaning spray, or snacks — with a refillable or plastic-free version.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Give a small gift that helps someone reduce plastic (e.g., tote, bottle, soap bar)

Giving can be an act of change and inspiration. I will give a thoughtful, plastic-free or plastic-reducing gift — like a reusable bag, bottle, or bar soap — to someone in my life and share why I chose it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Support an artist working for plastics reduction

Art can shift mindsets and spark movements. I will support a local or global artist using their work to raise awareness about plastic pollution — by purchasing, promoting, or sharing their art and message.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Recommend a documentary, podcast, or article about plastic to others

People are more likely to take action when someone they trust makes a recommendation. I will share a documentary, podcast, or article that helped me understand the impact of plastic to spark curiosity, conversation, and action in others.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Participate in or organize a community clean up

Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Pack a low or no-plastic lunch and talk about it with others

Food packaging is a major source of plastic. I will pack a lunch with little or no plastic and use it as a conversation starter with coworkers, classmates, or friends to share tips and inspire change.

An interesting article about the challenges of trying to live a new single use plastic free life for seven days! https://www.npr.org/2024/07/26/nx-s1-5021546/plastic-free-sustainable-living-tips

great article, Morgan! I had an inkling that it would be challenging (as the author describes) and much prep before hand would be needed to try to be plastic free for any amount of time! Loved that she was committed and did her best! That's all we can do :)

Over the weekend I made the swap on my dish soap and hand soaps. I purchased glass refillable soap dispensars so I can purchase dish soap and hand soap in recyclable or compostable containers, that are not plastic!

I gifted my friend a bar of Brixy Shampoo and Conditioner - which is what I use and love! She was new to the idea of Shampoo and Conditioner bars, so I hope these will convince her to make the zero plastic swap!

Since we mostly get to work from home, I don’t have to pack my lunch very often. However, my husband packs his lunch four days a week, and we’ve recently started using Lunchskins for his snacks.
Most of the time, we use a metal container for his salad or sandwich, but his treats—like trail mix or chocolate-covered almonds—used to go into a plastic bag. Not anymore! We’re Lunchskins people now. They’re super cute, convenient, and compostable!

I was sharing on our call earlier this week that I've switched to glass containers and saving smaller ones for snacks like trail mix but my lunch bag eventually gets very heavy! I need to look into more stashers! I'll look into Lunchskins too. Thanks for sharing, Morgan!

I was wondering what a good replacement would be as my fiancé and I would be are in the same boat. I don't have to pack my lunch often, but he does. I will have to get us switched over!

Thank you for posting, Morgan! This was nice to listen to and think about giving myself ultimatums of using the products I have in my home that are plastics until and promise myself next time that I will buy zero waste. Also, great reminders to buy produce that is not packaged, choose snacks like fruit or hardboiled eggs that don't need packaging, choosing establishments that are zero waste focused and choosing tap water over bottled water.
