First Steps: Start with You
Design my grocery routine for less plastic
Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 10 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Start a household challenge to reduce plastic
Change starts at home. I will create a fun challenge with my household — like using no single-use plastic for a day or swapping out a product — to make plastic reduction a shared goal.
First Steps: Start with You
Support businesses with plastic-free or refillable options
Where we spend our money shapes the market. I will support a business that offers plastic-free, low-waste, or refillable products or services.
First Steps: Start with You
Swap one product for a refillable or plastic-free option
Even small swaps can add up to big impact. I will replace one product I use regularly — like soap, cleaning spray, or snacks — with a refillable or plastic-free version.
First Steps: Start with You
Track my plastic use for a day or a week
Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.
First Steps: Start with You
Try one low-plastic meal
From plastic-wrapped produce to takeout containers, food is one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic. I will enjoy one meal using ingredients and tools that minimize plastic packaging — opting for items in aluminum, paper, steel cans, or glass jars instead of plastic. I’ll also use a water refill station instead of single-use bottles to keep the meal as plastic-free as possible.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Donate to organizations working on systemic plastic reform
Some nonprofits are leading the charge to change policies and corporate practices. I will donate to an organization working to reduce plastic at the source and promote systemic solutions for a healthier planet.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Support a plastic or climate advocacy campaign
Advocacy campaigns can drive real change by amplifying public support. I will find and support a campaign — through a donation, signature, or share — that’s working to reduce plastic pollution or address the climate impacts of plastic.
First Steps: Start with You
Discover the difference between bioplastics, compostable plastics, and recyclable plastics
Not all “eco-friendly” plastics are created equal. I will spend 20 minutes exploring the differences between bioplastics, compostable plastics, and recyclable plastics—and what happens to each at the end of its life.
Share My Why
Take the Beyond Plastic Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!

Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!

Catch microplastics in laundry before they spread
Washing synthetic fabrics releases tiny plastic fibers that end up in our waterways. I will install a washing machine filter or use a microplastic-catching device to capture microplastics before they leave my home — and I will share what I did and why with others to inspire more sustainable laundry habits.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go
Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Keep my reusable kit with me and model it in public
My everyday choices can influence others. I will carry and use a reusable kit in public spaces, modeling plastic-reducing behaviors and showing that small changes are possible.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Celebrate someone else’s plastic-free effort
Positive reinforcement goes a long way in fostering sustainable change. I will celebrate someone’s effort to reduce plastic — whether big or small — by acknowledging their success in the feed or on social media and encouraging them to keep going.

Level Up: Influence Friends and FamilyWhich microplastics solution did you choose? Did you learn anything interesting or surprising while deciding what to purchase?
Leah Newman 7/21/2025 11:29 AMWe decided to get the cora ball to catch microplastics in our washing machine. -

First Steps: Start with YouWhat patterns did you notice in your plastic use — and what would it take to shift one of them?
Leah Newman 7/18/2025 10:37 AMPlastic is everywhere!! It really is so hard to avoid. Being aware is the first step and then doing your best not to get overwhelmed. Start small and challenge yourself to see how far you can take it. -

Level Up: Influence Friends and FamilyWhat items did you include in your kit, and how has it changed your habits outside the home? Post a photo of your reusable kit in the feed to inspire others!
Leah Newman 7/17/2025 11:04 AMOur kit for a family of 4 includes washable fabric napkins, stainless steel utensils, silicone straws, reusable sandwich and snack bags, stainless steel water bottles, and reusable tote bags.-

Thank you for this list. I did not even think of fabric napkins. We still use paper napkins or paper towels at every meal.

Leah Newman 7/08/2025 11:33 AMProtecting and caring for Mother Earth is a common theme in our household. The kids are at an age where they are really starting to understand the impact of our daily choices and that small changes make a difference. Continuing to learn and grow as a family is important to me and this challenge is a great way to do that!-

REFLECTION QUESTION
Level Up: Influence Friends and FamilyWhat did your household choose to focus on, and what was it like to work toward change together? What helped or hindered your progress?
Leah Newman 7/08/2025 11:20 AMWe are choosing to not order takeout from restaurants for the month of July.
