Dina's actions
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Pack a low or no-plastic lunch and talk about it with others
Food packaging is a major source of plastic. I will pack a lunch with little or no plastic and use it as a conversation starter with coworkers, classmates, or friends to share tips and inspire change.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Keep my reusable kit with me and model it in public
My everyday choices can influence others. I will carry and use a reusable kit in public spaces, modeling plastic-reducing behaviors and showing that small changes are possible.
First Steps: Start with You
Track my plastic use for a day or a week
Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.
First Steps: Start with You
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Start a household challenge to reduce plastic
Change starts at home. I will create a fun challenge with my household — like using no single-use plastic for a day or swapping out a product — to make plastic reduction a shared goal.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prepare a low-plastic meal with a friend or family member
Reducing plastic can be easier — and more fun — when shared. I will plan and prepare a meal with friends or family that minimizes single-use packaging and plastic waste.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go
Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Catch microplastics in laundry before they spread
Washing synthetic fabrics releases tiny plastic fibers that end up in our waterways. I will install a washing machine filter or use a microplastic-catching device to capture microplastics before they leave my home — and I will share what I did and why with others to inspire more sustainable laundry habits.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Celebrate someone else’s plastic-free effort
Positive reinforcement goes a long way in fostering sustainable change. I will celebrate someone’s effort to reduce plastic — whether big or small — by acknowledging their success in the feed or on social media and encouraging them to keep going.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Participate in or organize a community clean up
Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product I have
Learning or sharing repair skills can keep useful items in use and out of the landfill. I will teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product — like sewing, electronic repair, or furniture restoration — and share what I did with my community, workplace, or group to encourage others to do the same.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Recommend a documentary, podcast, or article about plastic to others
People are more likely to take action when someone they trust makes a recommendation. I will share a documentary, podcast, or article that helped me understand the impact of plastic to spark curiosity, conversation, and action in others.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Support an artist working for plastics reduction
Art can shift mindsets and spark movements. I will support a local or global artist using their work to raise awareness about plastic pollution — by purchasing, promoting, or sharing their art and message.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Switch to investments that avoid fossil fuels and plastics
Where we put our money matters. I will research and invest in companies, funds, or assets that avoid investing in fossil fuels and plastic production, aligning my finances with my values.
First Steps: Start with You
Understand plastic labels
Those recycling numbers and symbols can be confusing. I will spend 5 minutes learning what different plastic labels mean, including what can and can’t be recycled, to make more informed choices when I shop.
First Steps: Start with You
Choose secondhand or a recycled product for my next purchase
Buying recycled or secondhand products helps close the loop and reduces demand for new plastic. I will look for and purchase a product made from recycled materials or choose a secondhand option the next time I shop to keep valuable resources in use longer.
First Steps: Start with You
Design my grocery routine for less plastic
Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 20 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.

REFLECTION QUESTION
Lead the Way: Shape Your CommunityWhat skill did you teach or learn, and how might it help you or someone else keep something in use longer? How did it feel to share or learn this skill?
Dina Lomagno 7/18/2025 3:56 PMMy drip system for my sustainable natural planter wall started not working, and my plants were dying off. Rather than buying a new system, I went to the local nursery and had them teach me how to repurpose other parts to actually fix the drip system and I did! Now I don’t have to rely on anybody else if any issues arise with it further. -
REFLECTION QUESTION
Level Up: Influence Friends and FamilyHow did it feel to recognize someone else’s effort? What impact do you think your celebration had on them?
Dina Lomagno 7/11/2025 4:11 PMI’m so proud of my mom, she texted me today and told me that she brought her reusable cup to pickle ball this morning and everyone was commenting on how pretty it was and she shared my journey with sustainability and how I’m always trying to get her to use recycled and reusable items And so afterwards her and her two girlfriends went to Starbucks and my mom bought two of her girlfriends reusable cups.-

Dina, your mom sounds wonderful! We need more people like her in the world, because she knows how to set a good example with verve, joy, and generosity.

REFLECTION QUESTION
First Steps: Start with YouHow did you decide what to buy — and what factors mattered most in making that decision?
Dina Lomagno 7/08/2025 9:56 AMI needed some new hiking gear and researched a little more regarding recycled clothing. I ended up purchasing from their RECYCLED COLLECTION which 70% of their fabrics this season are made with recycled materials. In addition I found that if you donate your old jeans to MADEWELL ,the donated jeans are recycled through the Cotton's Blue Jeans Go Green program, which turns them into housing insulation. Plus you get a $20 coupon so makes it a win win for everyone!-

REFLECTION QUESTION
First Steps: Start with YouWhat patterns did you notice in your plastic use — and what would it take to shift one of them?
Dina Lomagno 7/07/2025 4:03 PMOn July 4th we did a sustainable pool party where everyone had to bring something in a reusable container, no straws, no plastic cups, no napkins or paper/plastic plates/silverware. It was wonderful, everyone really pitched in to make it a no waste day and what was even better is we put our food waste right into our compost feeder!-

REFLECTION QUESTION
Level Up: Influence Friends and FamilyWhat kind of reactions—if any—did you notice from others? How did it feel to model change publicly? Where did you use your reusables? Post a pic of your kit in the feed!
Dina Lomagno 7/07/2025 4:00 PMI love the questions I get when I pull out my reusable straws/case and also the reusable chopsticks/case, it shows that people are truly interested in others actions and in the midst I can usually gain a new friend or get someone thinking more about how to be sustainable in their daily lives.-
Mary Hanks 7/08/2025 2:17 PM- TEAM CAPTAIN
Modeling sustainable behavior really does seem to be the best way to stimulate interest, which can lead to thoughtful conversation, which can result in change. In other words, walking the walk more than talking the talk, as we'd say here in Texas. :)

REFLECTION QUESTION
First Steps: Start with YouWhat’s one change to your grocery habits that felt more manageable than expected — or harder than expected? Why do you think some products, like produce, started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Dina Lomagno 7/07/2025 3:58 PMOur family utilizes reusable totes and insulated totes for our grocery shopping but while at the store yesterday I noticed that there were produce bags available that were mesh to allow the produce to breathe without using all those other plastic bags you find in that section. What a saver! I included all my items in there and didn't use 1 plastic bag!
