Bernadette's actions
First Steps: Start with You
Check recycling near me
Recycling rules vary by location. I’ll spend 10 minutes learning which plastics my local program accepts. This helps me avoid “wishcycling” — tossing items in the bin and hoping they’ll be recycled, even if they aren’t.
First Steps: Start with You
Choose secondhand or a recycled product for my next purchase
Buying recycled or secondhand products helps close the loop and reduces demand for new plastic. I will look for and purchase a product made from recycled materials or choose a secondhand option the next time I shop to keep valuable resources in use longer.
First Steps: Start with You
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.
First Steps: Start with You
Swap one product for a refillable or plastic-free option
Even small swaps can add up to big impact. I will replace one product I use regularly — like soap, cleaning spray, or snacks — with a refillable or plastic-free version.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go
Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Swap ideas for reducing plastic with someone close to you
Sharing ideas helps us stay motivated and discover new ways to take action. I will share ideas with friends or family members about ways we each reduce plastic in our lives.
First Steps: Start with You
Track my plastic use for a day or a week
Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.

Bernadette Lewis 7/09/2025 6:26 AMWent to a gathering/potluck yesterday evening with friends and several brought dishes in plactic or cover with plastic wrap. What a great opportunity to talk with others. My awareness was so much greater.-

I specifically remember the Christmas party I went to where a lady brought in the first beeswax covering I’d ever seen. She’d wrapped her pie in it. This is the sort of impact small changes make!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFirst Steps: Start with YouWhat did you discover about recycling and waste management in your area that more people should know? How might you share that knowledge?
Bernadette Lewis 7/07/2025 5:41 AMFound out that our church takes the walmart or any plastic bags to pack food in them for kids at a local school. -
Bernadette Lewis 7/03/2025 6:43 AMIt's amazing how easy some of this is to change. Eliminating ziplock bags for glass containers. Also now that the farmers markets are open what a great way to get your fruits and veggies and carry in your own reusable bag.-
Bernadette Lewis 7/03/2025 9:21 AMI agree! Much better. I haven't seen glass bowls with anything else other than plastic lids. That is all I use now. -

I've bought a number of glass containers. Some with plastic lids, not my first choice, but better.
