First Steps: Start with You
Find out why plastic recycling isn’t working as we expect and where plastics end up
Many of us recycle with good intentions, but most plastic doesn’t get recycled. I will spend 15 minutes learning why plastic recycling falls short and what really happens to plastic waste.
First Steps: Start with You
Track my plastic use for a day or a week
Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.
First Steps: Start with You
Discover the difference between bioplastics, compostable plastics, and recyclable plastics
Not all “eco-friendly” plastics are created equal. I will spend 15 minutes exploring the differences between bioplastics, compostable plastics, and recyclable plastics—and what happens to each at the end of its life.
First Steps: Start with You
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.
First Steps: Start with You
Design my grocery routine for less plastic
Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 15 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.
First Steps: Start with You
Understand plastic labels
Those recycling numbers and symbols can be confusing. I will spend 15 minutes learning what different plastic labels mean, including what can and can’t be recycled, to make more informed choices when I shop.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product I have
Learning or sharing repair skills can keep useful items in use and out of the landfill. I will teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product — like sewing, electronic repair, or furniture restoration — and share what I did with my community, workplace, or group to encourage others to do the same.
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!

REFLECTION QUESTION
First Steps: Start with YouWhat’s one change to your grocery habits that felt more manageable than expected — or harder than expected? Why do you think some products, like produce, started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Penny Lanigan 7/31/2025 8:14 AMI don’t buy packaged fruit anymore. It’s really not hard at all to bring home whole fruit, like pineapple and melon and cut into the sweet, fresh taste! Then I store the fresh fruit slices in glass containers. I feel very happy with my new choice. -
REFLECTION QUESTION
First Steps: Start with YouDid your estimated plastic footprint surprise you? How does it compare to the global average? After estimating your annual use, how did it feel to put a number on it? Did it inspire a sense of urgency, or something else?
Penny Lanigan 7/31/2025 8:11 AMThis challenge has taught me to be aware of my plastic consumption. What surprised me is that it doesn’t take that much effort but consistency is the key. -
Penny Lanigan 7/31/2025 8:07 AMIt’s amazing how easy it can be to eliminate or cut down on plastics when you become aware.-

Penny Lanigan 7/29/2025 12:59 PMI’ve been reusing petit mamam preserve jars for drinking glasses for years. -
Penny Lanigan 7/29/2025 8:37 AMIt’s not necessarily a skill, but every Tuesday, my friend, Leslee, and I hit the beach for turtle patrol along with our bags for beach cleanup and shovels to repair the holes left by humans. Today we collected a rather small amount of plastic debris, discarded plastic toys and a plastic volleyball net. In addition, we saw tiny loggerhead turtles making their way to the ocean. A truly lovely morning!-

Penny Lanigan 7/28/2025 4:47 PMWorking at the SC Aquarium has enlivened my passion for conservation and especially the elimination of massive plastic use. Why am I involved? It’s an easy answer-for the environment, for the preservation of all life on the planet, and, more personally, for my grandchildren and great grandchildren. May they inherit a world where we’ve stopped ravaging it and know how to love it. -
REFLECTION QUESTION
First Steps: Start with YouWhat patterns did you notice in your plastic use — and what would it take to shift one of them?
Penny Lanigan 7/28/2025 6:26 AMI use to use plastic food storage containers but I now have glass containers. -
Penny Lanigan 7/28/2025 6:23 AMSince tracking my plastic consumption, I’ve made a number of positive changes in order to reduce the use of plastic. I reuse plastic storage bags, I buy refills for laundry and dishwasher pods and continue to use the original container. -
Penny Lanigan 7/24/2025 5:15 PMDuring my beach sweeps I’ve collected all kinds of discarded plastic beach toys. I put them on the curb with a note for anyone who wants them. The note says to please reuse or pass on these toys and never leave them on the beach🩵-
Cynthia Link-Kinney 7/25/2025 8:05 AM- Pet Parent 🐾
I rehome them also but usually while I'm at the beach, there are so many kids with nothing. It's nice to put a smile on their face when they get something to keep. -

These are so fun! The toys get so much more use and kids that didn’t have many or any toys now get to play!

Penny Lanigan 7/24/2025 5:09 PMThis challenge has opened my eyes to the complications of plastic recycling. I learned so much and have taken a hard look at my own plastic consumption. I am committed to continuing my plastic reduction goals and to remove plastics from our environment where ever I can.
