Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Learn about policies that support reducing plastics

Policy is one of the most powerful tools for reducing plastic waste at scale. I will spend 10 minutes learning about current or proposed plastic-related policies, such as bans on single-use plastics or extended producer responsibility laws, to better understand how systems can change.

I have started refusing plastic bags at the store upon checking out. I will place the items back in my cart, or just use paper. It seems odd that a store would waste a plastic bag on one tiny item and a receipt. More people should be turning the bag down upon checkout. It would be a huge benefit if stores would require more items before a plastic bag is used, or just go paper only.

Agreed! I've also never understood why something that may actually already be in plastic needs to be put into yet another plastic bag. For example, produce that's pre-packaged doesn't need to be put into a plastic bag before being put into my reusable bag. If I took the time and energy to bring a reusable bag for multiple items in the first place, that's a good indicator that I'm not interested in "double-plastics!" ;-)

Today my sister surprised me by letting me know she purchased another portable straw. She said she saw how excited I was and purchased one for me as well. I use metal straws at home, but I am on my way to her house now, so I can use it while I am doing my running today.

I have to admit, I was a bit surprised at the responses I was receiving from my invites every day. Many people recognize items that are harmful, but then wish to continue about life as though it doesn't matter. One person can make a difference. Yesterday, I was so happy when my sister showed up at my house with a reusable straw that clips to her purse. She was so excited to show me that she was making an effort to reduce plastic.
