First Steps: Start with You

Explore plastic’s impact on communities

Plastic pollution doesn’t affect everyone equally. I will spend 20 minutes learning how plastic production, use, and disposal harm communities — especially those near waste sites.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Put reusables where I'll remember them

Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Choose secondhand or a recycled product for my next purchase

Buying recycled or secondhand products helps close the loop and reduces demand for new plastic. I will look for and purchase a product made from recycled materials or choose a secondhand option the next time I shop to keep valuable resources in use longer.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Track my plastic use for a day or a week

Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.

DAILY ACTIONS

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Share a favorite low-plastic product or tip on social media

Simple swaps or strategies can inspire others—especially when shared publicly. I will post about a favorite plastic-free product or habit on social media to help normalize sustainable choices and show others that small changes are doable and worth trying.

DAILY ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Leave a positive review for a business offering low-waste options

Businesses take notice when we show support for their sustainable choices—and so do our friends and neighbors. I will write a positive review for and personally recommend a business that offers low-plastic or refillable options to help others discover it and demonstrate that sustainability is valued by customers.

I’m looking for an effective degreaser that comes as a powder or at least something in a concentrate to minimize the amount of plastic.

I use baking soda to clean for a lot of pots/pans and even the stove top and inside the oven. Super cheap, non-toxic, and comes in cardboard!

I’m doing several of the things already, but how do I get my husband to make some changes? When I ask, it comes across as nagging.

Two things come to mind: 1) lead by example and 2) remove the plastic from your home so that he can only make good choices in the home. Obviously I don't know if that is possible. I have been little by little getting rid of the plastic containers in my house. Think of the long game.

It’s clear that poor and minority communities bear the brunt of pollution from plastic production. This starts with the initial processing of petroleum and continues to the manufacture of plastic products. But it doesn’t end there. Poor and minority communities are also much more likely to be impacted by pollution related to the disposal of plastics, whether they are burned in incinerators or landfilled.

The articles make it sound so easy! 😂 I manage to keep a reusable bag in the car for when I run an errand.

I spent time learning more about plastics, and understanding my own plastic use and how I can reduce it.
