Lisa's actions

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Catch microplastics in laundry before they spread

Washing synthetic fabrics releases tiny plastic fibers that end up in our waterways. I will install a washing machine filter or use a microplastic-catching device to capture microplastics before they leave my home — and I will share what I did and why with others to inspire more sustainable laundry habits.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Visit a local recycling center, landfill, or transfer station

Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Check recycling near me

Recycling rules vary by location. I’ll spend 5 minutes learning which plastics my local program accepts. This helps me avoid “wishcycling” — tossing items in the bin and hoping they’ll be recycled, even if they aren’t.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Track my plastic use for a day or a week

Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Try one low-plastic meal

From plastic-wrapped produce to takeout containers, food is one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic. I will enjoy one meal using ingredients and tools that minimize plastic packaging — opting for items in aluminum, paper, steel cans, or glass jars instead of plastic. I’ll also use a water refill station instead of single-use bottles to keep the meal as plastic-free as possible.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Participate in or organize a community clean up

Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Understand Plastic’s Impact on My Health

Plastics can leach harmful chemicals into food, water, and the air we breathe. I will spend 5 minutes learning about the health impacts of plastic exposure and explore safer swaps — like choosing glass or stainless steel over plastic for food storage and drinking water.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Share My Why

Plogging

Plogging is the Scandinavian name for picking up trash as you exercise or just go about your day in your community. I will "plog" 1-5 pieces of plastic and bring them home to recycle

I found the challenges this year to be frustrating. I'm proud of the steps I already take to reduce my plastic use, but could not use them as challenges, and was left with educating and advocating challenges that are FAR out of my comfort zone. I was also unable to create my own challenge until very late in the month, but at least was able to retroactively check those in. This is a subject near and dear to me, and I wish I could have done more.

Sorry it was tougher this year Lisa. You're still top 10 on the team and I appreciate your desire to achieve more! I included similar comments in the survey and hope you select it and contribute to making this ecochallenge enjoyable for all.

Good job!! You probably have some good feedback for the survey. Perhaps they will modify the challenge next year to accommodate your favorite actions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What patterns did you notice in your plastic use — and what would it take to shift one of them?

I start the day with yogurt that comes packaged in plastic. Aside from making my own, how can I avoid it?

The first step to this one is buying a large container of yogurt, not the individual cups. You probably already do that knowing how conscious you are of plastics. But yeah, beyond that, it's a tough topic. Clearly cleaning it out for recycle is a must, but maybe searching for brands that use some level of post-consumer recycled content in the container could be an option? It's tricky when it comes to food packaging, but someone might be doing it. Hopefully they make good yogurt!

I recently made yogurt for the first time using whole milk. It was very easy and, if you get milk in bottles, no plastic used!

Good thought. I hadn’t thought of that either. I usually have yogurt for breakfast, but switched to oatmeal this month and hadn’t thought about the plastic element of yogurt. Would be nice if they could store in something else better for the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What does this meal reveal about how deeply plastic is built into our food systems — and what needs to change?

It is almost impossible to eat a meal completely untouched by plastic, unless you grow your own vegetables, raise your own meat , and butcher it!. Drinking is much easier, as water, milk and wine are usually not packaged in plastic
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What kinds of plastic waste did you find the most, and what does that say about local habits or systems?

In the clean-up of Brandywine Park, the most plastic waste we found was at a spot where teenagers gather overlooking the river. Are they not being taught?

I ask myself this as well Lisa. You and the others participating in that cleanup led by example, which is a great way to teach. Many people were in the park with us, so let's hope they picked up trash or decided to hang onto their own until they find a proper receptacle. And remember, we had some teens and a little boy with us, so they're going to be advocates for this cause as well.
