Mary's actions

First Steps: Start with You

Find out why plastic recycling isn’t working as we expect and where plastics end up

Many of us recycle with good intentions, but most plastic doesn’t get recycled. I will spend 10 minutes learning why plastic recycling falls short and what really happens to plastic waste.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Host a “bring your own container” lunch or event

Gatherings are a great time to model new habits. I will plan or participate in a lunch or event where people bring their own containers, utensils, or cups to reduce single-use plastic.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Put reusables where I'll remember them

Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Swap one product for a refillable or plastic-free option

Even small swaps can add up to big impact. I will replace one product I use regularly — like soap, cleaning spray, or snacks — with a refillable or plastic-free version.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Track my plastic use for a day or a week

Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Design my grocery routine for less plastic

Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 10 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Swap ideas for reducing plastic with someone close to you

Sharing ideas helps us stay motivated and discover new ways to take action. I will share ideas with friends or family members about ways we each reduce plastic in our lives.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go

Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Leave a positive review for a business offering low-waste options

Businesses take notice when we show support for their sustainable choices—and so do our friends and neighbors. I will write a positive review for and personally recommend a business that offers low-plastic or refillable options to help others discover it and demonstrate that sustainability is valued by customers.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Promote plastic awareness during an event or meeting

Events are powerful moments to inspire change. I will include a brief message, resource, or tip about reducing plastic at a meeting, celebration, or community gathering I attend or help organize.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Participate in or organize a community clean up

Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Support a plastic or climate advocacy campaign

Advocacy campaigns can drive real change by amplifying public support. I will find and support a campaign — through a donation, signature, or share — that’s working to reduce plastic pollution or address the climate impacts of plastic.

I'm "seeing" the plastic more. Now that I'm aware, I search for products that don't have any or try to reuse it but it's not easy. Even ALL milk/soy milk containers have plastic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
How do businesses influence the choices we make—and how can your support help shift what’s considered “normal”? What did the business do that made you want to support them?

Say something to customer service or ask for a manager because businesses lead by example.

I have a New Seasons grocery store near my house. Occasionally I will buy a baguette from them and they changed their packaging so there is a clear strip of plastic running up the front. Why? I am always compelled to pull out the plastic so I can recycle the paper. Why did they make that change? They didn't need to because their baguettes are delicious and fresh. I am going to say something to the management. Thank you for the inspiriation!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What patterns did you notice in your plastic use — and what would it take to shift one of them?

My largest plastic use is frozen veggie packaging. I'm a vegan so eat lots of veggies. I now buy larger quantities & don't buy "bagged" veggies or fruit. I go to a farmers market so control the plastic there too & cook my own instead of using frozen.

I wish frozen veggies came in something more eco friendly !!

The potluck we mentioned bringing you own plate, utilizes & cloth napkins but we brought extra. People commented that it felt more comfortable and homey.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What’s one change to your grocery habits that felt more manageable than expected — or harder than expected? Why do you think some products, like produce, started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I have lowered the amount of plastics, I can see it in my trash can because I don't have to "throw out the trash" half as often BUT it's really difficult to go a day without it. I eat alot of frozen veggies, they used to come in boxes with wax paper but they are hard to find. I think people are a bit nervous about germs & although plastic has so many chemicals, they think it's more healthy : (
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What influenced your decision on what to swap, and how does that small change feel in the bigger picture? Was the swap easy or difficult? What did it make you realize about convenience, cost, or access to better options?

It was easy because in my home town of St Pete, there is a "refillery" place called Sans Mkt is amazing. I like their products, it's alittle more expensive but not much. I feel good and have told many people about our treasure!

What new ideas or perspectives came up in your conversation? Did anything surprise or challenge you? Did anyone share ways they reduce plastics with you? If so, post the new ideas in the feed!

A clerk from a fast food place couldn't comprehend why I didn't need a fork or why I didn't want meat on my salad. I was traveling and ALOT of plastic is used. It difficult to get around it or help people "notice" there are other options. At a restaurant, they wanted to separate the leftovers but I asked to combine. One idea that I LOVE is a store that is a "refillery". I bring in my old shampoo, laundry & dishwashing soap containers & we weigh & pay based on the amt I purchased.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I keep a stash of clothes bags and containers in the car. At first, I forgot to bring a bag into a drug store. I simply set it down, walked out to my car and paid for my item them. I think I did that 2 more times and I remember it now!

I'm good at keeping a stash of bags in my car too, but I like the idea of keeping some other containers in there too -- maybe for leftovers from a restaurant or to buy bulk products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What was the most eye-opening fact you learned about the limits of recycling, and how might it shift your habits? How do you feel knowing that so much of what we put in recycling bins may never actually be recycled? What should we do differently?

How much greenwashing is going on to make people think they are helping the environment. The idea/plan to make the producer of the product cover the cost of recycling seems like the needed answer. They would find other answers!

OK but since I was traveling the last 2 weeks, I found I had less control. Bought food out and then had take out. At a fast food restaurant, the clerk was having so much trouble accepting that I didn't need one of their plastic forks.
