Kaitlyn's actions
First Steps: Start with You
Design my grocery routine for less plastic
Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 20 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Support an artist working for plastics reduction
Art can shift mindsets and spark movements. I will support a local or global artist using their work to raise awareness about plastic pollution — by purchasing, promoting, or sharing their art and message.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Start a plastic reduction conversation at school, work, or a community group
Big changes often begin with one bold conversation. I will bring up the topic of reducing plastic at school, work, or in a group I’m part of, planting the seed for collective action.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Keep my reusable kit with me and model it in public
My everyday choices can influence others. I will carry and use a reusable kit in public spaces, modeling plastic-reducing behaviors and showing that small changes are possible.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Give a small gift that helps someone reduce plastic (e.g., tote, bottle, soap bar)
Giving can be an act of change and inspiration. I will give a thoughtful, plastic-free or plastic-reducing gift — like a reusable bag, bottle, or bar soap — to someone in my life and share why I chose it.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Pack a low or no-plastic lunch and talk about it with others
Food packaging is a major source of plastic. I will pack a lunch with little or no plastic and use it as a conversation starter with coworkers, classmates, or friends to share tips and inspire change.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prepare a low-plastic meal with a friend or family member
Reducing plastic can be easier — and more fun — when shared. I will plan and prepare a meal with friends or family that minimizes single-use packaging and plastic waste.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Host a “bring your own container” lunch or event
Gatherings are a great time to model new habits. I will plan or participate in a lunch or event where people bring their own containers, utensils, or cups to reduce single-use plastic.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Create a reminder system or routine for remembering reusables
Even the best intentions can be forgotten in the rush of daily life. I will create a system — like a note on the door or a checklist — to help me and others in my household remember to grab our reusables before we go.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Start a household challenge to reduce plastic
Change starts at home. I will create a fun challenge with my household — like using no single-use plastic for a day or swapping out a product — to make plastic reduction a shared goal.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Participate in or organize a community clean up
Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go
Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Celebrate someone else’s plastic-free effort
Positive reinforcement goes a long way in fostering sustainable change. I will celebrate someone’s effort to reduce plastic — whether big or small — by acknowledging their success in the feed or on social media and encouraging them to keep going.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Support a plastic or climate advocacy campaign
Advocacy campaigns can drive real change by amplifying public support. I will find and support a campaign — through a donation, signature, or share — that’s working to reduce plastic pollution or address the climate impacts of plastic.
First Steps: Start with You
Put reusables where I'll remember them
Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.
First Steps: Start with You
Track my plastic use for a day or a week
Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.
First Steps: Start with You
Try one low-plastic meal
From plastic-wrapped produce to takeout containers, food is one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic. I will enjoy one meal using ingredients and tools that minimize plastic packaging — opting for items in aluminum, paper, steel cans, or glass jars instead of plastic. I’ll also use a water refill station instead of single-use bottles to keep the meal as plastic-free as possible.
First Steps: Start with You
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Switch to investments that avoid fossil fuels and plastics
Where we put our money matters. I will research and invest in companies, funds, or assets that avoid investing in fossil fuels and plastic production, aligning my finances with my values.
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Donate to organizations working on systemic plastic reform
Some nonprofits are leading the charge to change policies and corporate practices. I will donate to an organization working to reduce plastic at the source and promote systemic solutions for a healthier planet.
Share My Why
Take the Beyond Plastic Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!

REFLECTION QUESTION
First Steps: Start with YouWhat patterns did you notice in your plastic use — and what would it take to shift one of them?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/31/2025 7:19 AMWhen it comes to groceries, majority of my plastic use comes from what I pack in my lunch. The convenience of throwing together an Uncrustable or Lunchable with some chips and prepackaged fruit is hard for me to give up. Taking the time to plan ahead in the week really helped -

I love seeing how creative artists get with the supplies and mediums they use. Here at the Florida Aquarium we have an art installation with work from local students. The supplies they used to create the art came from beach clean ups they participated in, -

One of my favorite gifts to give are the handmade soap bars that have the sea sponge attached to them. Being able to reuse the sponge afterwards again and again is great.-

Kaitlyn, I think this is the best gift I've seen mentioned in the feed! You make me want to dig out my soapmaking supplies and get to work.

Purchased reusable produce bags for the next time I go shopping- I tend to just use the plastic ones once and get rid of them. Excited to see the difference this makes. Plus they are much easier to open!-

I learned the same thing and you can fit so much more in the reusable bags, it's wonderful! :)

REFLECTION QUESTION
Lead the Way: Shape Your CommunityHow did the experience go, and what did it show you about the barriers or opportunities for using this as a strategy to reduce waste?
Kaitlyn Gengler 7/29/2025 6:58 AM- Educator 🧠
Had my friends over for a bbq an encouraged them to bring their reusables- or used mine. It was easier than expected, plus it saves money! Only downside was having to wash all the plates and utensils, but that was not a huge deal.-

I produce content for a nonprofit radio station that dubs itself progressive, so I was disappointed that they don't recycle at the studio--even when they had a big event to celebrate the opening of their new premises. I dutifully made the rounds collecting plasticware and cans before bringing them home with me on PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. I suspect the other rail and bus riders thought a thing or two about me, since I was only able to give the items the most cursory of rinsing and those 60 plastic champagne glasses were emanating a serious odor of alcohol. :)

Went kayaking this weekend and set 2 goals- see some manatees and pick up any trash in the springs. We managed to accomplish both! Brought an extra bag to place any scooped up liter into. -

It is so unfortunate how people just empty their trash even in parking lots onto the ground, or wherever they are and don’t care. After storms I see much worse, as it seems to wash out and centralize random pieces into the steam of water as it passes. -

I wish we have more campaigns and promotions suggesting better options than single use plastic

As an avid Croc wearer I was excited to learn that you can bring your used Crocs back to the store to have them be recycled, plus you get a small discount!-
Penny Lanigan 7/23/2025 8:57 AMChaco does the same thing. I have “rechacoed” mine several times. They’ll replace the tops or the fasteners or the entire shoe for very little.
