Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Contact a civic leader about a plastic reduction policy

My voice matters. I will contact 3 civic leaders or elected officials to express support for a local, regional, or national policy aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable alternatives.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Participate in or organize a community clean up

Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Design my grocery routine for less plastic

Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 30 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Pack a low or no-plastic lunch and talk about it with others

Food packaging is a major source of plastic. I will pack a lunch with little or no plastic and use it as a conversation starter with coworkers, classmates, or friends to share tips and inspire change.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Find or suggest a refill station or reusable system

Access is key to making sustainable choices easier. I will suggest a refill station (like for water, soap, or dry goods) or a returnable container system in a space I use regularly — such as a school, office, store, or gym — to help make plastic-free options more visible and convenient for everyone.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Check recycling near me

Recycling rules vary by location. I’ll spend 30 minutes learning which plastics my local program accepts. This helps me avoid “wishcycling” — tossing items in the bin and hoping they’ll be recycled, even if they aren’t.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Encourage Local Support for Low-Waste Businesses

Community incentives can encourage more low-waste, reusable, and secondhand businesses to thrive. I will reach out to my local government, chamber of commerce, or business association to discuss potential incentives for businesses that reduce plastic waste through reusable systems, secondhand goods, or low-waste practices.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Prepare a low-plastic meal with a friend or family member

Reducing plastic can be easier — and more fun — when shared. I will plan and prepare a meal with friends or family that minimizes single-use packaging and plastic waste.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Start a household challenge to reduce plastic

Change starts at home. I will create a fun challenge with my household — like using no single-use plastic for a day or swapping out a product — to make plastic reduction a shared goal.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Visit a local recycling center, landfill, or transfer station

Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Find out why plastic recycling isn’t working as we expect and where plastics end up

Many of us recycle with good intentions, but most plastic doesn’t get recycled. I will spend 30 minutes learning why plastic recycling falls short and what really happens to plastic waste.

COMPLETED 21
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Estimate My Plastic Consumption

Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Support a plastic or climate advocacy campaign

Advocacy campaigns can drive real change by amplifying public support. I will find and support a campaign — through a donation, signature, or share — that’s working to reduce plastic pollution or address the climate impacts of plastic.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Donate to organizations working on systemic plastic reform

Some nonprofits are leading the charge to change policies and corporate practices. I will donate to an organization working to reduce plastic at the source and promote systemic solutions for a healthier planet.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Create a reminder system or routine for remembering reusables

Even the best intentions can be forgotten in the rush of daily life. I will create a system — like a note on the door or a checklist — to help me and others in my household remember to grab our reusables before we go.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go

Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Catch microplastics in laundry before they spread

Washing synthetic fabrics releases tiny plastic fibers that end up in our waterways. I will install a washing machine filter or use a microplastic-catching device to capture microplastics before they leave my home — and I will share what I did and why with others to inspire more sustainable laundry habits.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Swap one product for a refillable or plastic-free option

Even small swaps can add up to big impact. I will replace one product I use regularly — like soap, cleaning spray, or snacks — with a refillable or plastic-free version.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Support businesses with plastic-free or refillable options

Where we spend our money shapes the market. I will support a business that offers plastic-free, low-waste, or refillable products or services.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Switch to investments that avoid fossil fuels and plastics

Where we put our money matters. I will research and invest in companies, funds, or assets that avoid investing in fossil fuels and plastic production, aligning my finances with my values.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Choose secondhand or a recycled product for my next purchase

Buying recycled or secondhand products helps close the loop and reduces demand for new plastic. I will look for and purchase a product made from recycled materials or choose a secondhand option the next time I shop to keep valuable resources in use longer.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Put reusables where I'll remember them

Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.

COMPLETED 27

Share My Why

Take the Beyond Plastic Ecochallenge Feedback Survey

I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!

    Last day!
I wish I was able to put together a neighborhood cleanup during this month, but I think this would be better for the cooler weather.

I'm interested in finding an alternative for nylon lines for the yard trimmer. We're using it to manage the grass against the house, so metal might not be the best option.

Let me know if anyone has any suggestions!

I looked into some of my investments and noticed a hotel company's stock was also tied to oil stocks. I understand the need to diversify in an unpredictable market, but I sold and reinvested in a high-yield dividend stock. Wish me luck!

Oh wow! That is sad that there is still debris from the 4th! We have been getting a lot of storms and lots of natural debris from that. That is a great idea to organize a clean up to help beautiful the neighborhood and keep things out of the sewer system.

My district representative responded to a letter requesting more to be done about single use plastics and protecting our waterways and beaches. It noted he most recently voted for the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act in 2020. It is currently 2025. It has inspired me to try and navigate how he's voted this year and how communicate more effectively to hold him responsible to voting in his constituents interests rather than politically motivated ones.

Today I learned about Operation National Sword which was an initiative by China in 2017 to be more restrictive about recycling imports. This has created a situation where recycling sorting facilities have no where to send the recycling after they've sorted it. Because so much recycling is dirty (contaminated or unrinsed), domestic facilities are refusing more products.

Visited the Tampa Amphitheater this weekend and was surprised to see composting containers available for guests. I appreciate how they've removed plastic water bottles and have opted for aluminum caned water and there are recycling bins next to almost every garbage can making it easy to place your container in the correct spot.

I love my little glass containers with snap on lids! The only problem I've had with them is that I want to bring them everywhere to avoid Styrofoam or plastic containers for takeaway.
