Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Celebrate someone else’s plastic-free effort

Positive reinforcement goes a long way in fostering sustainable change. I will celebrate someone’s effort to reduce plastic — whether big or small — by acknowledging their success in the feed or on social media and encouraging them to keep going.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Understand plastic labels

Those recycling numbers and symbols can be confusing. I will spend 5 minutes learning what different plastic labels mean, including what can and can’t be recycled, to make more informed choices when I shop.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Design my grocery routine for less plastic

Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 10 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Start a household challenge to reduce plastic

Change starts at home. I will create a fun challenge with my household — like using no single-use plastic for a day or swapping out a product — to make plastic reduction a shared goal.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Find out why plastic recycling isn’t working as we expect and where plastics end up

Many of us recycle with good intentions, but most plastic doesn’t get recycled. I will spend 5 minutes learning why plastic recycling falls short and what really happens to plastic waste.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Visit a local recycling center, landfill, or transfer station

Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Track my plastic use for a day or a week

Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Swap ideas for reducing plastic with someone close to you

Sharing ideas helps us stay motivated and discover new ways to take action. I will share ideas with friends or family members about ways we each reduce plastic in our lives.

This years challenge yet again made me more aware of ways I can reduce my plastic footprint!

Today I realized that one of my friends apartment doesn’t recycle and have agreed that she can bring hers to my bin every week!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
What did your household choose to focus on, and what was it like to work toward change together? What helped or hindered your progress?

When challenging my family- we decided to focus on smaller things. I came to realize though that where they live there are more options for reducing, recycling or refusing plastic options.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What’s one change to your grocery habits that felt more manageable than expected — or harder than expected? Why do you think some products, like produce, started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I find that avoiding plastic when grocery shopping is near impossible given the way in which the local options package produce. I feel that while it serves a purpose, there are options to reduce. I did try to only purchase produce this week that avoided plastic packaging and brought reusable produce bags with me.

Now that we are six days in and I have been tracking my plastic usage, I have definitely identified areas where I could improve that I never noticed before,
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
How did it feel to recognize someone else’s effort? What impact do you think your celebration had on them?

I was impressed that a friend sorts out their recycling at her apartment and brings it to her recycling center each week!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What was the most eye-opening fact you learned about the limits of recycling, and how might it shift your habits? How do you feel knowing that so much of what we put in recycling bins may never actually be recycled? What should we do differently?

I realized that within the area there are more limits to what can be recycled and will continue to learn as I go.

It's strange that within 10 miles there can be 3 or more different guidelines to what can be recycled. I know at work the items are different than in Brandon and St Pete
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What do you think the confusion around plastic labels says about our waste systems — and how could they be improved? What role do you think clear labeling should play in helping people make better choices — and who should be responsible for that?

I discovered I was misunderstanding some recycling labels in hillsborough county and what can be processed!

There needs to be a universal system so people aren't so confused and discouraged about recycling
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What patterns did you notice in your plastic use — and what would it take to shift one of them?

When tracking plastic I realized I use more than I realized in the sense of all of the home items that contain plastic.

There is a store near me that will take in old items and craft supplies (even half empty paints, yarn, fabric, etc) to use in art classes they have
