Alexandrea's actions

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Pack a low or no-plastic lunch and talk about it with others

Food packaging is a major source of plastic. I will pack a lunch with little or no plastic and use it as a conversation starter with coworkers, classmates, or friends to share tips and inspire change.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Catch microplastics in laundry before they spread

Washing synthetic fabrics releases tiny plastic fibers that end up in our waterways. I will install a washing machine filter or use a microplastic-catching device to capture microplastics before they leave my home — and I will share what I did and why with others to inspire more sustainable laundry habits.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Swap one product for a refillable or plastic-free option

Even small swaps can add up to big impact. I will replace one product I use regularly — like soap, cleaning spray, or snacks — with a refillable or plastic-free version.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Leave a positive review for a business offering low-waste options

Businesses take notice when we show support for their sustainable choices—and so do our friends and neighbors. I will write a positive review for and personally recommend a business that offers low-plastic or refillable options to help others discover it and demonstrate that sustainability is valued by customers.

DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Find out why plastic recycling isn’t working as we expect and where plastics end up

Many of us recycle with good intentions, but most plastic doesn’t get recycled. I will spend 15 minutes learning why plastic recycling falls short and what really happens to plastic waste.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go

Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Create a reminder system or routine for remembering reusables

Even the best intentions can be forgotten in the rush of daily life. I will create a system — like a note on the door or a checklist — to help me and others in my household remember to grab our reusables before we go.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Estimate My Plastic Consumption

Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Track my plastic use for a day or a week

Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Swap ideas for reducing plastic with someone close to you

Sharing ideas helps us stay motivated and discover new ways to take action. I will share ideas with friends or family members about ways we each reduce plastic in our lives.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Invite others to join the Ecochallenge

Our actions are more powerful when we take them together. I will invite someone to join the Ecochallenge with me so we can learn and take action together.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Give a small gift that helps someone reduce plastic (e.g., tote, bottle, soap bar)

Giving can be an act of change and inspiration. I will give a thoughtful, plastic-free or plastic-reducing gift — like a reusable bag, bottle, or bar soap — to someone in my life and share why I chose it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Participate in or organize a community clean up

Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product I have

Learning or sharing repair skills can keep useful items in use and out of the landfill. I will teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product — like sewing, electronic repair, or furniture restoration — and share what I did with my community, workplace, or group to encourage others to do the same.

What influenced your decision on what to swap, and how does that small change feel in the bigger picture? Was the swap easy or difficult? What did it make you realize about convenience, cost, or access to better options?

I switched from liquid body soap to farmer's market bar soap and have been using secondhand tupperware containers in place of plastic baggies. My switch to bar soap was seamless as I find liquid soaps to be too strong smelling anyway. My switch to tupperware takes a bit more effort in dishes, but makes up for it in my ability to pack soft foods in my lunch without worrying about them getting squished. These transitions made me realize how accessible and simple making more sustainable choices can be.

So many of our choices seem driven by companies and their marketing. You've stopped to examine those choices in light of your own needs and preferences, and discovered better choices for you. Happy for you.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
Did your estimated plastic footprint surprise you? How does it compare to the global average? After estimating your annual use, how did it feel to put a number on it? Did it inspire a sense of urgency, or something else?

I was pretty sad to learn how big my plastic footprint is, but feel I've partially redeemed myself for my extremely low fashion footprint. The plastic footprint calculator served as a great reminder that all the little day-to-day things really do add up over the course of a year. On the other side of the coin, this goes to show that small efforts every day to reduce plastic consumption can also make a big impact at the end of the year. I definitely have some more reusable swaps to make

What skill did you teach or learn, and how might it help you or someone else keep something in use longer? How did it feel to share or learn this skill?

I learned a new sewing stitch that I had been wanting to learn for a while: the invisible stitch! I also learned two techniques to fix holes in sweaters. I think learning these techniques will help me to not only repair my clothing but reduce the likelihood that I get rid of my clothes any time soon for sentimental reasons.

As I invest more time and effort into personalizing my clothes and other belongings, the less willing I am to get rid of them in a transition period. Learning new skills like these makes me feel empowered and excited to continue breathing new life into my most cherished belongings.

Well said Alex! You make a good point about the internal debate people may find themselves in when they personalize something but then it gets damaged. Repair is a way to keep it longer and continue one's connection with its message.

I starting by hanging my reusable shopping bags by my front door, but still managed to forget them. I now keep a stash of them in my car in plain sight, which makes it almost impossible to forget them at the grocery store.

I've found keeping reusable bags in more than one place helps, eventually it seems to become a habit to always them have around.

How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What kinds of plastic waste did you find the most, and what does that say about local habits or systems?

While the nature of trash pick-up is a never ending task, doing it in a large group makes it easy to see how big of an impact we can make together. My group found several food/gum wrappers and to-go cups as well as many plastic pieces that were no longer identifiable. The area we helped clean is likely a place people visit on their lunch breaks, which was made evident by all the food packaging waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What was the most eye-opening fact you learned about the limits of recycling, and how might it shift your habits? How do you feel knowing that so much of what we put in recycling bins may never actually be recycled? What should we do differently?

I was disappointed to learn that so many "recyclable" products end up in landfill. I will use this knowledge to be more mindful of how I dispose of recycling and which products I choose to use and invest in. I think we can start with putting honest labels on packaging and committing to holding companies that put out dishonest labels accountable for the waste they are responsible for.
