Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Share a favorite low-plastic product or tip on social media

Simple swaps or strategies can inspire others—especially when shared publicly. I will post about a favorite plastic-free product or habit on social media to help normalize sustainable choices and show others that small changes are doable and worth trying.

DAILY ACTIONS

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Recommend a documentary, podcast, or article about plastic to others

People are more likely to take action when someone they trust makes a recommendation. I will share a documentary, podcast, or article that helped me understand the impact of plastic to spark curiosity, conversation, and action in others.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Visit a local recycling center, landfill, or transfer station

Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product I have

Learning or sharing repair skills can keep useful items in use and out of the landfill. I will teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product — like sewing, electronic repair, or furniture restoration — and share what I did with my community, workplace, or group to encourage others to do the same.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Put up a sign or note about reducing plastic at a shared space (kitchen, dorm, office)

Visual cues can inspire action in shared spaces. I will place a friendly sign or reminder in a common area — like a kitchen, bathroom, or office — to encourage less plastic use and spark conversation. I’ll include a clear, specific call to action so people know exactly how to take the next step.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Give a small gift that helps someone reduce plastic (e.g., tote, bottle, soap bar)

Giving can be an act of change and inspiration. I will give a thoughtful, plastic-free or plastic-reducing gift — like a reusable bag, bottle, or bar soap — to someone in my life and share why I chose it.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Learn about policies that support reducing plastics

Policy is one of the most powerful tools for reducing plastic waste at scale. I will spend 10 minutes learning about current or proposed plastic-related policies, such as bans on single-use plastics or extended producer responsibility laws, to better understand how systems can change.

DAILY ACTIONS

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Set up a Free Store for surplus items

Sharing or giving away unwanted items can reduce plastic waste and build community connections. I will set up or promote a free store at my workplace, school, or church to help redistribute surplus items — like office supplies, kitchenware, clothing, or books — and keep them in use rather than buying new.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Keep my reusable kit with me and model it in public

My everyday choices can influence others. I will carry and use a reusable kit in public spaces, modeling plastic-reducing behaviors and showing that small changes are possible.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Put reusables where I'll remember them

Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Choose secondhand or a recycled product for my next purchase

Buying recycled or secondhand products helps close the loop and reduces demand for new plastic. I will look for and purchase a product made from recycled materials or choose a secondhand option the next time I shop to keep valuable resources in use longer.

I have kept my reusable bags in my car for years. I also carry fold up reusable bags from the Greater Good that are always in the backpack I carry. It's become a habit. My main challenge is to somehow get my husband to use the reusable bags that are in his car!

I guess he doesn't carry a backpack where you could fold-up reusable bags...

I have been feeling very bad about purchasing my little tomatoes (the sweet variety) at Aldi, because they are packaged in plastic. Even though it's #1 plastic, I'd still prefer not to have to recycle it at all. Today I went to Trader Joe's for the first time in a good while and noticed they had the sweet little tomatoes packaged in a cardboard container!!! I was thrilled. From now on, that is where I will go to purchase these type of tomatoes. I just don't understand why other types of fruit and vegetables cano't be packaged in the same manner to avoid all the plastic containers and wrappers.

You might like to consider shopping at one of the Farmers' markets in Houston. I can generally buy my cherry tomatoes there without any packaging. And, I like knowing who is growing my food and developing a relationship with them.

What kind of reactions—if any—did you notice from others? How did it feel to model change publicly? Where did you use your reusables? Post a pic of your kit in the feed!

So, I have these reusable bags with cats on them that my mother bought for me on the Greater Good website. I use them everywhere because I can fold them up and carry them in my backpack. I’ve had many compliments on them and have been able to also share about the Greater Good website.
People love the bags and have told me they will check out the website. Hopefully, I've helped cashiers and baggers learn how easy it is to substitute reusable bags for single use plastic ones.

I'll have to check out Greater Good - as I don't think I've heard of them before. Thanks for sharing.

I have been a member of the Sante Fe Zoo team in Gainesville Florida in the past. They did not have a team this year though. My faith beliefs informed my decision to take care of creation as a member of this group. But I may be the only token Catholic! Lol! Thank you for allowing me to join you!

Although I am Lutheran, I serve as advocacy animator for Laudato Si Movement - TX. So, I get to be the token Lutheran in that group. Welcome!
