First Steps: Start with You
Find out why plastic recycling isn’t working as we expect and where plastics end up
Many of us recycle with good intentions, but most plastic doesn’t get recycled. I will spend 10 minutes learning why plastic recycling falls short and what really happens to plastic waste.
First Steps: Start with You
Put reusables where I'll remember them
Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.
First Steps: Start with You
Swap one product for a refillable or plastic-free option
Even small swaps can add up to big impact. I will replace one product I use regularly — like soap, cleaning spray, or snacks — with a refillable or plastic-free version.
First Steps: Start with You
Track my plastic use for a day or a week
Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.
First Steps: Start with You
Design my grocery routine for less plastic
Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 10 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Swap ideas for reducing plastic with someone close to you
Sharing ideas helps us stay motivated and discover new ways to take action. I will share ideas with friends or family members about ways we each reduce plastic in our lives.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go
Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Leave a positive review for a business offering low-waste options
Businesses take notice when we show support for their sustainable choices—and so do our friends and neighbors. I will write a positive review for and personally recommend a business that offers low-plastic or refillable options to help others discover it and demonstrate that sustainability is valued by customers.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Host a “bring your own container” lunch or event
Gatherings are a great time to model new habits. I will plan or participate in a lunch or event where people bring their own containers, utensils, or cups to reduce single-use plastic.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Promote plastic awareness during an event or meeting
Events are powerful moments to inspire change. I will include a brief message, resource, or tip about reducing plastic at a meeting, celebration, or community gathering I attend or help organize.
Lead the Way: Shape Your Community
Participate in or organize a community clean up
Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.
Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies
Support a plastic or climate advocacy campaign
Advocacy campaigns can drive real change by amplifying public support. I will find and support a campaign — through a donation, signature, or share — that’s working to reduce plastic pollution or address the climate impacts of plastic.

Take the Beyond Plastic Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!

Ro Capelli 7/31/2025 12:17 PMI made a concerted effort to take time almost every day to check in on this site and do many of the tips to prevent plastic use and waste, and I’m glad I did! It was helpful to me to learn new information on plastics and their harm to humans and the environment, and to pick up new ways to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.
I’m definitely not perfect on this yet, but I have made big improvements in lessening my plastic impact and they were simple actions to take! Plus it was fun being part of a team and community also committed to doing the same. Thank you for the opportunity! -
Ro Capelli 7/20/2025 11:20 AMI’m enjoying learning more about what can actually be recycled, and realizing we need to drastically reduce our use of all plastics-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFirst Steps: Start with YouWhat influenced your decision on what to swap, and how does that small change feel in the bigger picture? Was the swap easy or difficult? What did it make you realize about convenience, cost, or access to better options?
Ro Capelli 7/18/2025 8:44 AMI didn’t want to continue putting shampoo bottles into landfill, so I tried a bar shampoo I found (packaged in paperboard only). It is harder to find bar shampoo locally, especially since Trader Joe’s sadly stopped carrying it!), so ordering them online is a bit more expensive. But the bar shampoos are usually better quality ingredients and it feels great to remove more plastic from my life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFirst Steps: Start with YouWhat routines or habits help you remember to use reusables, and what challenges have you run into?
Ro Capelli 7/16/2025 12:41 PM- Keeping reusable bags in the same spot in car so I remember bring them into stores
- Washing my reusable utensil set & putting the kit back in my backpack each evening as a routine
- Keeping a coffee pot at work so I don’t use the office single-use coffee pods
I haven’t run into any issues; I have only replaced one set of routines for another, except this set of practices is so much more sustainable and leaves a positive impact in my world and others’
