First Steps: Start with You

Learn how plastic is made

Understanding the origins of plastic helps us see its environmental impact more clearly. I will spend 30 minutes learning how plastic is made — from fossil fuels to finished product — and reflect on how that knowledge influences my choices.

First Steps: Start with You

Understand Plastic’s Impact on My Health

Plastics can leach harmful chemicals into food, water, and the air we breathe. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the health impacts of plastic exposure and explore safer swaps — like choosing glass or stainless steel over plastic for food storage and drinking water.

First Steps: Start with You

Design my grocery routine for less plastic

Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 30 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.

First Steps: Start with You

Track my plastic use for a day or a week

Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.

My household’s biggest plastic use is food packaging. I try to use all that I can at least one more time, such as using bread bags as an extra layer in the freezer or for small litter sweeps. A big help would be the ability to bring my own containers to a buy in bulk store, but the nearest one is close to an hour away. Hopefully one day one will open close to me!

I agree, Kate! We have a few refill stores here for personal and cleaning products but not for bulk foods.

Plastic has been too easy for manufacturers. I bet if it costed what it really takes to close the loop then bulk stores would be more common.

Not much surprised me, but the microplastics from food storage is increasingly concerning. I haven’t had a drink in a plastic bottle in years. I eat very simply, so I don’t buy many convenience foods but even “healthy” foods are packaged in plastic and the closest store where I can buy in bulk is almost an hour away. While I have never microwaved food in plastic containers, I do store and freeze cooked food in deli-type plastic containers—the plastic containers are light and stackable. I also use glass bowls for storage, and I need to look at using more glass jars in lieu of using plastic.

I've been proud to take part in the Plastic-Free Challenge for many years, and each time I’ve found new ways to cut back on my personal plastic use. This year, my commitment continues—not just to reduce single-use plastics in my daily life, but also to deepen my understanding of how plastics affect our environment and to help raise awareness about their widespread impact.

I’m excited to keep learning, challenging myself, and sharing what I discover with others. 😊
