First Steps: Start with You

Understand Plastic’s Impact on My Health

Plastics can leach harmful chemicals into food, water, and the air we breathe. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the health impacts of plastic exposure and explore safer swaps — like choosing glass or stainless steel over plastic for food storage and drinking water.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Check recycling near me

Recycling rules vary by location. I’ll spend 10 minutes learning which plastics my local program accepts. This helps me avoid “wishcycling” — tossing items in the bin and hoping they’ll be recycled, even if they aren’t.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Estimate My Plastic Consumption

Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Put reusables where I'll remember them

Reusables only help if we use them! I will set up a system that helps me remember my reusable bags, bottles, containers, or utensils — whether that means keeping them by the door, in my car, or in my bag.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Support businesses with plastic-free or refillable options

Where we spend our money shapes the market. I will support a business that offers plastic-free, low-waste, or refillable products or services.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Try one low-plastic meal

From plastic-wrapped produce to takeout containers, food is one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic. I will enjoy one meal using ingredients and tools that minimize plastic packaging — opting for items in aluminum, paper, steel cans, or glass jars instead of plastic. I’ll also use a water refill station instead of single-use bottles to keep the meal as plastic-free as possible.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Swap one product for a refillable or plastic-free option

Even small swaps can add up to big impact. I will replace one product I use regularly — like soap, cleaning spray, or snacks — with a refillable or plastic-free version.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Prep a reusable kit for on-the-go

Having reusables ready and integrated into your daily routine can help you avoid single-use plastic while out and about. I will put together a kit with items like a mug, water bottle, utensils, or tote bag to take with me when I leave the house.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Create a reminder system or routine for remembering reusables

Even the best intentions can be forgotten in the rush of daily life. I will create a system — like a note on the door or a checklist — to help me and others in my household remember to grab our reusables before we go.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Pack a low or no-plastic lunch and talk about it with others

Food packaging is a major source of plastic. I will pack a lunch with little or no plastic and use it as a conversation starter with coworkers, classmates, or friends to share tips and inspire change.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Prepare a low-plastic meal with a friend or family member

Reducing plastic can be easier — and more fun — when shared. I will plan and prepare a meal with friends or family that minimizes single-use packaging and plastic waste.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Start a household challenge to reduce plastic

Change starts at home. I will create a fun challenge with my household — like using no single-use plastic for a day or swapping out a product — to make plastic reduction a shared goal.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Put up a sign or note about reducing plastic at a shared space (kitchen, dorm, office)

Visual cues can inspire action in shared spaces. I will place a friendly sign or reminder in a common area — like a kitchen, bathroom, or office — to encourage less plastic use and spark conversation. I’ll include a clear, specific call to action so people know exactly how to take the next step.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Encourage my workplace to switch to reusable products

Every reusable cup, plate, or utensil at work makes a difference. I will talk with my team or leadership about switching to reusable products in shared spaces like break rooms or kitchens.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Participate in or organize a community clean up

Plastic pollution is visible in many communities. I will take part in or organize a cleanup event to remove litter, raise awareness, and spark conversations about how plastic ends up in our environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Support an artist working for plastics reduction

Art can shift mindsets and spark movements. I will support a local or global artist using their work to raise awareness about plastic pollution — by purchasing, promoting, or sharing their art and message.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Learn how plastic is made

Understanding the origins of plastic helps us see its environmental impact more clearly. I will spend 10 minutes learning how plastic is made — from fossil fuels to finished product — and reflect on how that knowledge influences my choices.

Kind and informative. People seemed receptive to the signs and changing their habits. I brought in a couple sets silverware for people to use instead of plastic ones.

Even items that appear to not be wrapped in plastic but in things like cardboard, can STILL be coated with plastic! So not only is it not recyclable, but your food also it still sitting in plastic which is full of chemicals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What influenced your decision on what to swap, and how does that small change feel in the bigger picture? Was the swap easy or difficult? What did it make you realize about convenience, cost, or access to better options?

Smoothies from Smoothie King come in Styrofoam cups and today I asked if they could put my smoothie in one of my travel cups, which they did. I don't believe their cups are recyclable and it felt good to know that I kept one piece of garbage out of the landfill today. I will continue to ask them to put my smoothie in my cup.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What did you discover about recycling and waste management in your area that more people should know? How might you share that knowledge?

I learned that some things that you would think should be recycled cannot be because there are multiple layers to them that do not all recycle. They may be cardboard, but are coated with something else.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    First Steps: Start with You
What do you look for when choosing to support a business making sustainable packaging choices, and how do you think we can support more of them?

I didn't realize these options were available until I started looking more into things that could reduce waste. I HIGHLY recommend Clean People sheet laundry detergent and whoever makes the wool dryer balls I am currently using (not helpful, I know). It really just takes looking for companies who use less packaging. Do some research.

We are focusing on food wrappers and laundry waste. We started using reusable food containers, recycling what we can, and we switched to dryer balls instead of dryer sheets, and sheet detergent instead of liquid.

There are so many chemicals involved in making plastic! I knew there were some, but not that many!

Everything comes in plastic containers, some even further wrapped in a plastic overlay! Luckily some of it is recyclable, but not all. More needs to be!

Making sure I place my reusable storage bags easily accessible and on top of the single use bags. Sometimes the single use bags are just easier, but I still use them more than once.
