First Steps: Start with You
Track my plastic use for a day or a week
Awareness is the first step toward change. I’ll track how much plastic I use in a day (or week), paying attention to packaging, food containers, and single-use items. I’ll reflect on what surprised me most and what I could do differently.
First Steps: Start with You
Learn how plastic is made
Understanding the origins of plastic helps us see its environmental impact more clearly. I will spend 15 minutes learning how plastic is made — from fossil fuels to finished product — and reflect on how that knowledge influences my choices.
Level Up: Influence Friends and Family
Catch microplastics in laundry before they spread
Washing synthetic fabrics releases tiny plastic fibers that end up in our waterways. I will install a washing machine filter or use a microplastic-catching device to capture microplastics before they leave my home — and I will share what I did and why with others to inspire more sustainable laundry habits.
First Steps: Start with You
Design my grocery routine for less plastic
Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 30 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.

Take the Beyond Plastic Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
First Steps: Start with You
Litter removal
I walk the beach as part of a sea turtle team, looking for & protecting nests. As I walk, I remove, as much as I can, any litter. The majority is plastic-based. This is all done to protect the marine environment & animals.

Donna Barrio 7/23/2025 5:57 AMI am a tea drinker & have primarily used tea bags forever. That said, I still have a chest full of various teas, all in bag form. Having learned that most tea bags are comprised of some measure of plastic, my goal is to transition to loose leaf teas as these bags deplete. I have several tea balls for individual servings and have recently obtained a larger ball for pot-sized brewing. I’m excited!-

Donna Barrio 7/10/2025 6:07 AMI am visiting my daughter…who inspired me many months ago…to use silicone food bags & glass containers! Today we set up closet storage shelves (a new townhome) to help organize her space. -
Donna Barrio 7/09/2025 5:18 AMI’m heading out of town for a very long weekend with my daughter (in Florida). However, I am packing all my snacks in glass or reusable silicone bags…even the dog food & treats! My check-ins may or may not happen…-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFirst Steps: Start with YouWhat patterns did you notice in your plastic use — and what would it take to shift one of them?
Donna Barrio 7/03/2025 12:07 PMMost of my plastic use is at the grocery store. I am more aware now, and try to buy glass or paper packaged items; however, produce is often pre wrapped so I do opt for loose items when I can.
