Chris's actions

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Celebrate someone else’s plastic-free effort

Positive reinforcement goes a long way in fostering sustainable change. I will celebrate someone’s effort to reduce plastic — whether big or small — by acknowledging their success in the feed or on social media and encouraging them to keep going.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Start a household challenge to reduce plastic

Change starts at home. I will create a fun challenge with my household — like using no single-use plastic for a day or swapping out a product — to make plastic reduction a shared goal.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Level Up: Influence Friends and Family

Pack a low or no-plastic lunch and talk about it with others

Food packaging is a major source of plastic. I will pack a lunch with little or no plastic and use it as a conversation starter with coworkers, classmates, or friends to share tips and inspire change.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Find or suggest a refill station or reusable system

Access is key to making sustainable choices easier. I will suggest a refill station (like for water, soap, or dry goods) or a returnable container system in a space I use regularly — such as a school, office, store, or gym — to help make plastic-free options more visible and convenient for everyone.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Check recycling near me

Recycling rules vary by location. I’ll spend 10 minutes learning which plastics my local program accepts. This helps me avoid “wishcycling” — tossing items in the bin and hoping they’ll be recycled, even if they aren’t.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product I have

Learning or sharing repair skills can keep useful items in use and out of the landfill. I will teach or learn a skill to extend the life of a product — like sewing, electronic repair, or furniture restoration — and share what I did with my community, workplace, or group to encourage others to do the same.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Support businesses with plastic-free or refillable options

Where we spend our money shapes the market. I will support a business that offers plastic-free, low-waste, or refillable products or services.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Lead the Way: Shape Your Community

Put up a sign or note about reducing plastic at a shared space (kitchen, dorm, office)

Visual cues can inspire action in shared spaces. I will place a friendly sign or reminder in a common area — like a kitchen, bathroom, or office — to encourage less plastic use and spark conversation. I’ll include a clear, specific call to action so people know exactly how to take the next step.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Choose secondhand or a recycled product for my next purchase

Buying recycled or secondhand products helps close the loop and reduces demand for new plastic. I will look for and purchase a product made from recycled materials or choose a secondhand option the next time I shop to keep valuable resources in use longer.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Design my grocery routine for less plastic

Our grocery habits are one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic, from packaging on produce to plastic bags and containers. I will spend 10 minutes researching low-plastic shopping strategies and make a list of things to look for or do differently the next time I go to the store.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Change the Game: Shift Systems and Policies

Learn about policies that support reducing plastics

Policy is one of the most powerful tools for reducing plastic waste at scale. I will spend 10 minutes learning about current or proposed plastic-related policies, such as bans on single-use plastics or extended producer responsibility laws, to better understand how systems can change.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Estimate My Plastic Consumption

Understanding my plastic footprint is a powerful first step toward making change. I will complete a short online plastic calculator, like the one from rePurpose Global, to estimate my annual plastic use and explore ways to reduce it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

First Steps: Start with You

Understand Plastic’s Impact on My Health

Plastics can leach harmful chemicals into food, water, and the air we breathe. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the health impacts of plastic exposure and explore safer swaps — like choosing glass or stainless steel over plastic for food storage and drinking water.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

First Steps: Start with You

Learn how plastic is made

Understanding the origins of plastic helps us see its environmental impact more clearly. I will spend 10 minutes learning how plastic is made — from fossil fuels to finished product — and reflect on how that knowledge influences my choices.

I'm very proud to be affiliated with an organization that gives so much back to the environment by setting up regular clean ups through out Tampa Bay. Seeing the amount of trash they pull out is a real eye opener to how damaging humans have been and what a difference we all can make to reverse it.

A lot of the trash we've cleaned aren't necessarily people not caring about what they toss, as we have hurricanes that cause a lot of trash to be dispersed! During my clean up, we got a car seat that had likely been there since last year's storms.

I like seeing companies like Aldi not give you an option for plastic bags. You will plan accordingly when you go fully knowing you need to bring your own bag. If every grocery store did it, we would be forced to bring our own.

My home state of NJ put a ban on single use plastic bags in stores- would be interesting to see if more states do this in the future!

Sam's Club and Costco too. Although finding a bag for bulk items is probably driving that I'll still take it as a win!

Even though it may not be convenient to not have recycling pickup, try setting your own up and bring to the local facility.

Yes, I'm happy that I live in a large city with several recycling centers...especially since curbside pickup has been so iffy around here lately.

Yes it's hot out. Try not buying bottled water, add a filter to your faucet. It's just as good and cheaper in the long run.

I cringe when I see colleagues who work in an office space, using a bottle of water, or more so an event where bottles of water are provided for large social meetings. Is it socially unacceptable to use jugs or pitchers or water? It is much cheaper this way too!

Refused a bag today. Figured it was only 2 items and had a receipt if someone asked. One bag not in the dump or ocean is always a plus!

I did too! What was even more alarming was that the check out person at Publix was excited to see a reusable bag and mentioned she doesn't see them as much any more.

If you see garbage lying around, be a pal and pick it up so it doesn't end up in our oceans. Every little bit helps.

When I was able to hike, one of my friends would always have a bag for trash and hang it on the outside of her pack. We'd pick up trash we saw along the way and throw it away at the end.

Dumped a garbage full of recyclables at the local center. Amazing how fast your recyclable materials add up.

I will need to plan for this type of trip - thanks for the suggestion. We try to avoid doing a lot of online shopping, but did experience an extended freeze on curbside pickup of recycling. I could easily break down the bulk of boxes we have due to the gap, and deliver to the recycling center as part of a multi-errand day (i.e. when using the car versus mass transit). Thanks for that idea, Chris.

I couldn't agree more! In my neighborhood we're supposed to get pick-up at least twice a month, but we recently went 44 days between service. They skipped one scheduled date but told us to leave our bins on the street because they'd be picked up soon...then they missed another scheduled pick-up AND the one after that! Finally, two days after the third missed pick-up, the trucks finally came for our recyclables. The saddest part? Folks are giving up on recycling since they can't count on it. Less than 10 minutes ago I read on the Nextdoor app that yet another neighbor is just going to put her recycling in the regular trash until there's again some semblance of a regular schedule. :(
